Here are a couple of stunners! Part of a set issued after WWI to celebrate the restoration of peace. 1919 witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The WW was at last over. Japan issued 4 stamps for peace, these along with Switzerland, were considered the best of kind. Dove and Olive Branch. 3 sen and 10 sen designed and drawn by Saburosuke Okada, from the Imperial Institute of Art (Teikoku Geizyutu-in) Japanese Postage Stamps Tourist Library 1940

What I collect: Primarily focused on Japan, but lots of other material catches my eye as well ...

Those two are also among my favorite Japan stamps of all time, and probably my favorite of the early ones. I happen to already have the set of 4 scanned and uploaded, so please excuse my duplication of two of the stamp that James has already shown. Those remaining two values are not among my favorites, and I tend to think of them as looking more like chickens of peace. Rod, thanks for the info about the Swiss stamps. I'll check them out. (And still very much enjoying your recommendation for the stamp design book. I only get through about a page a day, since I look up with a Scott everything he references and doesn't have a color plate for.) -- Dave

Just found a slightly larger scan. It may show up at the same size on here, but if you right-click and view image, you should see a larger one (although I could be wrong).

And not to take this too far off-thread (sorry, James), but here is a borrowed image from someone's listing of the Swiss stamps that Rod referenced. (I bet those would be quite striking if the image were gussied up a little bit.) -- Dave

Lovely stamps, the topic lends itself to great designs.

The "chickens of peace" were designed and drawn by Somei Yuki, also from the Imperial Institute of art. They make a lovely quadriga of stamps. Happy to hear you enjoying "Stamp design" and was worth the purchase.

From the Scott catalog:
The Japan set was issued on July 1, 1919; in value order, the stamps are Scott 155 through 158.
The Switzerland set was issued on August 1, 1919; in value order, the stamps are Scott 190 through 192.
