This one is definitely a head-scratcher. Here is my WAG -- US Scott 3504, a joint issue with Sweden on March 22, 2001. Sweden's issue included 3 other Nobel prize-related, Slania-engraved stamps (Scott 2415a-d).

I'm waiting for a clue on the specific scientist - according to Wikipedia, 30 different scientists have won the Nobel Prize for RNA biology. There is a Swedish stamp for Nobel Prize winners in Physiology for their studies in squid nerve axons, but that stamp was engraved by Martin Mörck ...

OK, kind of tricky - a joint stamp issue, so perhaps stamps from both Spain & Sweden will qualify? Celebrating the 1906 & 1959 Nobel prize winners Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Dr. Severo Ochoa for their respective work in neuroscience ("axon") and molecular biology ("RNA"). Stamps engraved by Czesław Słania, images nabbed from Ann Mette Heindorff's excellent website on Slania engravings. Ryan

Sorry it was tricky . But as a slight defence, that's what the ":" was supposed to signify...but Well Done, Ryan!

Sorry no; but remember that bagpipes do not necessarily implicate Scotland or it's progeny - they have the best publicists, but bagpipes have been used for centuries throughout Europe and the middle east:

Beer Hall Augustin and Rooty-Toot Fancy-Pants Augustin. And believe it or don't, there is a fine website for bagpipe stamps. Check this page and this page for info on the two Austrian stamps to feature Augustin (yes, they have two!). The second link has full info on the story (and how it relates to both the plague and the bagpipe). Ryan
