A new comp for today, as the subject line implies, the comp has to do with clues. Each day i will post a clue about a certain stamp...all you have to guess is which one and post its image. It must be the exact stamp not one in the same issue...if you let the cat out of the bag too soon... My clues will be based on the Wiki article(s)/pics on the stamp and on catalogue info. First to post the correct pic wins...no pic no points. Any questions? No? Ok lest's go.... 1 1st clue

Well, immediately I'd suggest it has to be a gold? coin of either King George5, or King George6 imp: =imperator.
IND:IMP King and emperor of India, perhaps.

Not all the clues are in yet...and it does not pay to discuss 'you hand' before you make your choice (or your competitors might get an easy ride) ...just like in poker

(Actually, I learned that now we're supposed to say "Cabo Verde", just as with "Cote d'Ivoire" they no longer want us to use the exonym.) Ryan

All I can come up with so far is a picture of a King George V sovereign coin that appears to be your source for the image snippet. But I can't get any farther than that yet! Ryan

Assuming that the coin isn't on the stamp but rather suggestive of the design, I will guess it is Great Britain's £1 green, perf. 11x12 Seahorse (with the KGV portrait by Australian artist/sculpter Bertram Mackennal) printed in 1913 by Waterlow Bros. & Layton (Scott 176). Unfortunately, I don't own that stamp but an image of it may be viewed here.

I don't know my stamps well enough to play along, but the image is of course Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The most likely answer at this point is the United States 3c violet, perf 10.5x11 Devils Tower issue of 1956 (Scott 1084).

WOW!! Steve that is amazing! You are correct and the first by miles here and elsewhere! The 2nd clue was going to be: 10.5 x 11; but you don't need it! Well done

Mick, you may not know your stamps but you sure know your Movies! I wonder if Steve used your information or if he had already worked that clue out? PS - It does not diminish Steve's great deduction in any way as the information was posed for everyone to see...I was just curious.

Had it not been for Mick's identification of the image, I would have pursued Ryan's potatoes on stamps quest and offered this 3/4c carmine rose, perf. 11 potato tax stamp (RI1; 1935) as my first guess.

OK, I am all at sea here. How do you match a man and a plate of potato mash, to the devil's tower?

...How do you match a man and a plate of potato mash, to the devil's tower? One either has to be really, really good or he/she has to have seen the movie (I fall into the latter category).

How do you match a man and a plate of potato mash, to the devil's tower? No bangers, damn the luck and more's the pity. Here's another scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind that will give reference to Steve's deduction. There was also the possibility that the original clue could have lead us in the direction of Tristan da Cunha and their potato stamps, both the original stamp in potato denomination and the later stamp that commemorated it. Stamp on stamp! Ryan

The first clue is supposed to lead you in a number of different directions. The potato shot may have been a little unfair to people who had not seen "Close encounters..." but then any clue would be unfair to some people...it's why there will always be at least 4 clues. I am afraid that lateral thinkers like Steve, and i am not one of them, will always have some advantage over the rest of us...but that's life. Anyway. I hope some of you are enjoying the contest and another question will soon be underway... cheers

Hahahaha Very cute guys, you can see I am not a fan of US movies (example the the rescuer attempting to save the fallen woman off cliff, they touch fingertips) But still, how Steve got that, still challenges comprehension.
