The official website of The British Monarchy identifies the Falkland Islands as one of 14 British overseas territories. The Falkland Islands Government website states: "The Falkland Islands is a self-sufficient country with a long history and unique culture. The people of the Falkland Islands have the right to self-determination, enshrined in international law." Argentina claims sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands and the United Nations has been urging Argentina and the United Kingdom to negotiate a settlement of the question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) since it passed Resolution 2065 on December 16, 1965. In view of the above, creating a geography-based Falklands thread struck me as the simplest solution to my question of where to post Falklands-related material. I recently purchased some Falklands Islands stamps and thought I'd showcase two of them: a 1/2 p yellow green, perf. 14 war tax stamp (Scott MR1) issued October 7, 1918 and a 1p blue violet, perf. 12 dependencies stamp with map of the Falkland Islands (Scott 1L2) issued February 1, 1946.

Please tell what resolution you used for your scan to get such a beautiful, crisp clear image? Thanks in advance.

Please tell what resolution you used for your scan to get such a beautiful, crisp clear image? Thanks in advance. I scanned the stamps at 600 dpi then, using Irfanview, resized the images to 1024x768 pixels and saved them at a file size of 99 kb each.

Thank you! I'm thinking of doing a large scan of one of each type of the Irish Overprints that I posted for identification purposes. I'm using Picasa - I'll try following your recommendations.

I scan all my stamps at 600dpi. I use ACDSee as my image viewer of choice, and "save as" and save the stamp image as the original name, it resizes automatically down to about 135 Kb per image.

How can one institution, consider a service unprofitable, sell to another who claims to "make improvements" and consider it good enough to purchase? Someone is telling porkies. Something has to give, surely, service or quality, pay and conditions.
Australia pays Qantas chief, 5 Million dollars a year, to post this year, a 3 Billion dollar loss. Great work if you can get it.

It's about time this thread was bumped. West Falkland postmark of JY 28 1899. Very early usage, with the cancel only known from JY 7 1899 to OC 6 1904. Very scarce

SG24 Crown Registered cancel used at Fox Bay 1899-1914. The stamp also has a partial marginal watermark "CR" of "CROWN AGENTS" instead of the usual Crown CA. Very scarce

Maybe the US Government will take after the Falkland Islands and privatize our post office. A company that loses billions of dollars of year should be out of business. There is no excuse for this. Government should not be in the business of business.

Two of my favourite stamps come from the Falklands 1933 Centenary set Thanks for posting these great images of the classic Falklands issues, Dave and Nelson (@falshung)--just beautiful stamps! So, Dave, I also really like the two you have shown here. Are they both available as images on t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. as shown on your website? If so, I might have to get one of the King Penguin!

This will be the find of the year for me, I'm sure! I went to a suburban stamp fair today, and spotted this MH Falkland Islands 1933 1½d Whaler. I snapped it up instantly for $24. It's SG129a, a variety discovered just a couple of years ago, with a CV of £1,500. It just goes to show that rare stamps are still up for grabs!

If you collect the King George VI issues from the Falkland Islands, it is possible to determine most of the values in the set based on the paper and gum combined with the colors of the stamp. The stamps were printed by Bradbury Wilkinson who printed a few other George VI era Colonies' issues like the Bermuda lower values, Gambia, Gold Coast, and Trinidad & Tobago among others. Many of the Falkland Islands values only had four printings that were spaced far enough apart that the paper and gum alone will identify them.
The 5/ issue is a good example and it contains the rare Indigo color shade, so it is worth determining. For the record, the Indigo shade was from the 1938 printing and it was sent to the Colony rather than being released to dealers in London. That is why it is so rare unused. Ironically, many of the used 5/ stamps you might find are from this printing.
Before I even look at the color which is sometimes a little difficult to accurately allocate, I look at the back of the stamp against black paper under a strong light. There were four printings of the 5/ issues: 1937, 1938, 1944, and 1950. Each of these used paper and gum and printing conditions that were available during this time period. Generally speaking, you can find examples of each of these paper and gum types in other low cost values that you can use to determine the 5/ and other high values. If this is something that interests you, look over the two links below. One is for the entire set of stamps with printing details, and the other goes into more detail on the 5/ issues with larger images.

Call it cartographic flyspecking? sherro and stanley64 got me doing it. As if there was any doubt, globalization is globalization, even in the Falklands: 'How Prosperity Transformed the Falklands', The New Yorker, 29 June 2020. Not the least bit philatelic, but too good to overlook. Well, the author does mention 'red post boxes and the red phone booths outside the post office.'

A couple of interesting Falkland Islands covers. The first one marks the opening of the Mount Pleasant Post Office on 2nd November 1984 and is signed by Governor Rex Hunt with his official hand stamp. The second is a Fox Bay first day cover for the 2d 21st Anniversary of the Government Air Service issued on 8th April 1969 with a Falklands Islands Internal Airmail hand stamp. What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

The body clock is a bit wonky still so as I was up anyway I decided to open the auction lots that were awaiting me when I got back from vacation. I have always like the Falkland Islands George V set with the penguin and whale along the bottom. I already had 4 low values used but as is often the case the best way to get a good buy on higher values is to buy sets. This is a short set mint lightly hinged up to the 5 shilling. The 10 shilling and 1 pound seem almost always to be sold as single items and that will be my mission now to fill those 2 gaps.

Whilst I am in the thread, I could not help but notice the native bird series posted by anglobob and a lovely set it is.
I will point out though that the stamps were originally printed by Waterloo and later reprinted by De La Rue. A notable difference is in the shades between the two printings and the De La Rue issues tend to have better contrast. From what I can see, I would suggest that most of the stamps in the set shown are from the earlier Waterloo printings.
For those interested, more information can be found on the Falkland Islands Philatelic Study Group (FIPSG) webpage here.
Have fun and happy collecting!

Your comment stanley64 about this set having 2 printers makes me wonder which one mine is. I think I had added the higher values after only having the short set. The high values would have been lightly hinged but I did not want to hinge them again so I used the mounts. anglobob ‘s used set is very nice and well presented. When I see posts like that I think of redoing mine but it would be a massive undertaking.
