Let me preface this post with the admission that I have no expertise in this regard. My Google translation of the Forbin suggests that the stamp is the type of 1887 with 1895-1896 engraved (i.e., Forbin 71). The description of the 1887 series translates "Same type, 1887-1888 engraved." My interpretation of the 1887 listing is that rather than the years being a black overprint in the cartridge/tablet (as in the 1884 and 1886 series), it is engraved. Some examples of each of the series may be seen here (a 3+ MB .pdf file).

Hi Rodney Are you sure?? Look at the year inscription. There is no year "tablet". I thought I found the stamp in my Minkus until I realized that the stamp shown has no "tablet". Steve: I looked at he Forbin listing and it is very very similar to the Minkus listing. From what I see that stamp is not there either. I wish I had an old Ecuador Cstaldi catalog to see if it is listed there(been looking for one for years). Jerry B Hi Jerry, I must confess, I completely missed that difference, well done you! Steve's reply nails it, it is the only issue in those revenues, that departs from the "tablet" design, Forbin does not show that design. Great link that Steve supplied, I saved the weblink. Hope that satisfies you now

Hi Rodney and Steve I am satisfied I downloaded the Forbin catalog. So now I have Forbin and Album Weeds. Next, someone tell me where I can get, online, a Ecuador Cataldi or Bertossi catalog. Muchas gracias amigos. Jerry B

Here's an Ecuadorean oddball I came across recently. I doubt it's anything of extreme value but it isn't listed in anything I own so I can't say! This is Scott #C457 from 1969 with an inverted overprint. Not listed as such in Scott, Michel or SG Part 20 (South America). My library is nearly devoid of country-specific catalogues from South or Central America, I think the only one I've ever found is a 30-year-old catalogue for Uruguay. I don't even know if there is a country-specific catalogue for Ecuador, for that matter .... oops, Jerry B's post from above lists two different types. Ryan

Hi Ryan Cataldi and Bertossi are 2 Ecuador catalogs that I know of. Years ago when I was in Quito, Ecuador I went to 2 dealers and neither had "extra" copies to sell. My friend who owns a stamp store had an old Cataldi and I did not buy it as I thought they were readily available. Big mistake, they seem to be as rare as hen's teeth. I did see a Cataldi catalog on eBay a while back but I got outbid. I once asked Phil Banser (philatelic literature) to see if he could find a copy of a Cataldi catalog. After a few months he gave up. There is a Cataldi in the APRL, but not a Bertossi: Cataldi CatalogIf you do find one of the catalogs, I would grab it. Jerry B

A few examples of stamps overprinted after a fire in Guayaquil,1902.Each province had a separate overprint.Since moving to Ecuador, have started to acquire these stamps. They are commonly known as incendios, and there are lots of fake overprints....

A selection of incendios from the province of Guayas. There are numerous forgeries of these stamps, and I haven,t examined these yet.I don,t spend as much time on my Ecuador stamps as I do on my other interests.

Another selection ,this time of escolares...also from the province of Guayas. These date from 1907.Each province was allowed to overprint stamps to help finance education costs in each province. The overprint here was applied to every block of 4 stamps.Used blocks with a complete overprint are hard to find. Again, there are many forged overprints.

anglobob on 1902 Guayas is it the slanted "signature " that is the overprint? and on Guayas Escolares is it the double lined/bordered stamp? The others I see (Rios) (DE) but on these, I'm not sure what i am looking at * *disclaimer- I do not collect stamps from Ecuador, but i like their hats! (aka Panamas)

Hello, Stan ( stainlessb ): Guayaquil incendios have the slanted signature. The escolares have the double-lines on any of the four corners... looks like a double-lined V. Incendios from Loja have the Loja Franca overprint. It took me a while to figure out some of the overprints. These are probably the more common ones.

Incendios from the province of Bolivar. These can be identified by the overprint RESELLADA in various colours. All overprints were done manually,so they appear in different positions.Cancellations of this period always seem to be very heavy which often makes it more difficult to see any overprints.

Incendios from the province of Azuay. The overprint looks something like a shield or a heraldry sign, and was applied to a vertical pair of stamps,so its almost impossible to find a stamp with a complete cancellation. If a stamp has the usual heavy cancellation,it,s quite hard to see the overprint. There are also Escolar stamps from the province of Canar, issued in 1907,with a very similar overprint.

What is this? Is it a fiscal/revenue stamp or a fiscal/revenue stamp overprinted as a commemorative for the centenary of the city of Guayaquil? Also, is it a mis-perf or was it meant to be perforated like this to be torn in half sort of like an Italian parcel post stamp with one portion on the parcel and one portion on the waybill? It is not listed in the Scott catalogue. Also note that a previous owner of this stamp seems to have used hinges to reinforce the stamp from becoming pulled apart. As far as I can tell under magnification the hinges do not seem to be repairing the stamp as the halves have not been separated from one another. All the perfs are intact. There are also several blind perfs that may not show up on the scan.

Regarding the above fiscal revenue stamp, I found a whole new collecting rabbit hole that I am tempted to go down. Page 34, on this pdf, www.guayaquilfilatelico.org/biblioteca/ATFE_JCGV_V1.pdf (you will have to use the +/- button to magnify the page) of these homemade Ecuador fiscal tax stamps pages has a whole bunch of these stamps and it does indeed look like the perforation down the middle of the stamp is deliberate. On the page where I found this there are downloadable pages for Ecuador fiscal/revenue/telegraph stamps in case you are interested in going down the rabbit hole with me! www.guayaquilfilatelico.org/timbres.php

I added a couple more Ecuador lots to my collection from eBay recently that I started sorting through yesterday and today. This one is a back of the book lot with a few revenue stamps thrown in. michael , I am pretty intrigued with the idea of finding more revenue stamps from Ecuador, especially in the classics time period to 1940 or so.

I think of this stamp as an iconic stamp of Ecuador. It is a cheap stamp with minimum catalogue value in my 2016 Scott but I like the fact that it is bicolor, green and violet brown, and it has this large image of a cacao pod in the center vignette, violet brown on a white field. Like a lot of bicolor stamps from this time period you would expect mis-registration...off center either vertically or horizontally or somewhere up or down in a corner of the stamp when the second printing of the vignette occurred. I will bet that there are more spectacular examples than the ones I show here but these 4 stamps are what I have of Sc. no. 306. The two on the left have the cacao pod well centered within the white oval but the right two have the cacao pod shifted down and shifted to the right and upward.

Hi darkormex Miss-alignment of dual, triple, etc. coloured stamps happens often...I don't think a lot of printers go ballistic when certain colours
don't lineup 100 percent....Think they are more worried getting stamps out the door t get payed.
Here are a copy of mine from Canada..Lots more from WW stamps. Robert

michael , I am pretty intrigued with the idea of finding more revenue stamps from Ecuador, especially in the classics time period to 1940 or so. darkormex My interest in Ecuador revenue stamps is limited to those stamps printed by Perkins Bacon, of which there are only a few types. It has been a interesting journey as the differences between them and the other printers wasn't documented anywhere when I first started looking. It took a while but I can now spot them fairly easily. This is from a current auction on Ebay and one of these stamps is printed by Perkins Bacon. Spot the odd one out

Nice post, michael, thank you for that! I have been looking at the seven stamps, and although I cannot precisely state the reason, it is the 1-centavo that looks like the "odd one out" to me....
