The letter "K" was carved out of the killer, making it appear as a negative. Here is a "negative" of the cancel portion of Rod's image that may show the "K" a bit more clearly.

I see it now. I assume it's the thing in the middle that's more like two K's put together? Did it have some meaning or was it just used as a cancel and someone got creative with the cork?

I'm gradually assembling a collection of covers from Oregon coast towns, and if I assemble enough I will perhaps create a separate thread. This one is from Astoria, a lovely town in which I hope to settle in a few years, to Phoenixville, PA. It's a FDC, which is not usually my thing, but it's not really that "philatelic" in character. It commemorates the Whitman-Spalding trek, a 1835-6 expedition from New York to Oregon.

Ideally, I would have liked to have saved this for the postmark calendar. But for all the postmarks on this cover, I couldn't make out a date. US Modern Cover (2016?) Scarborough, ME to Portland, OR Stamps: 1978. 13c. Wildlife from Canadian-US border (Scott 1957a-h) - Cardinal, Mallard, Canada goose, Blue jay, Moose, Chipmunk, Red fox, Raccoon. The souvenir sheet debuted at the Canadian International Philatelic Exhibition, June 9-18 1978. 1988. 25c. Honeybee (Scott 2281) 1989. 25c. Eagle and Shield (Scott 2431) 1988. 25. Summer Olympics, Seoul (Scott 2380)

I just found the new pride and joy of my collection in my latest eBay purchase: When I started collecting I thought that the Pony Express was the coolest thing ever, and I may-or-may-not-have pretended that I was riding a swift and valiant steed, while under pursuit of ferocious Indians, to deliver letters of great importance when riding my bike through the neighborhood. To be honest though, who can resist the allure of cowboys and Indians and STAMPS, oh my!

This is an old favorite of mine: My mom actually gave this to me for Christmas in 2015 because I have always been fascinated with Navajo weaving.

I didn't take a very close look at this cover when I first received it, and unceremoniously dumped it into my "to be scanned" pile. Now that I have taken a closer look at the stamps, it has become one of my favorites. Stamps are: Scott 3265 - 1998 - Uncle Sam Scott 1480 - 1973 - Boston Tea Party - British Merchantman Scott 1481 - 1973 - Boston Tea Party - British Three-master Scott 1482 - 1973 - Boston Tea Party - Boat and Ship's Hull You see what the sender has done - he's used three of the four pane Boston Tea Party set and left out Scott 1483 - Boat and Dock. I love it! How "non-phalatelic" is that?

Astoria, Oregon to the W.W. Gavitt Medical Company in Topeka, Kansas. Postmarked 27 February 1917.
This cover has rather a lot going on, and I would appreciate any information on the various markings from our more knowledgeable members. These include: "A 2 7 17" on the back of the cover. A date? 2/7/17 would be a full 20 days prior to the mailing of the letter. A large "SV" in blue pencil. Applied by the post office? Any idea what SV would stand for? "Mar 8 1917" stamp, with "EL" in pen, in the bottom left corner of the envelope. Probably applied by someone at Gavitt, indicating that the letter had been processed. "A" in pencil on left, under the address. A couple of larger pencil "A's" (I think, maybe it is a pentagram for all I know). A few bits of writing in pencil - various numbers, letters, and whatnot. The sender, Alex Mesford, was born in 1870 in Norway ( link), which would make him 47 when he sent this envelope. He became a US Citizen in 1903 ( The Morning Astorian, 28 October 1903). Among other things, he was the Astoria representative of the Frisbie Motor Company, which advertised itself as being "the ideal engine for the fisherman" ( link), of which there are many in Astoria, Oregon, let me tell you. It seems that Alex Mesford was something of a fisherman himself, unfortunately not always paying strict attention to the letter of Oregon's fishing laws ( The Morning Astorian, 30 September 1905). Naughty lad.
Of W.W. Gavitt and his Medical Co. of Topeka, much has been written. Here is one fun page about him, from the blog Civil War Medicine (and Writing). (The image below is from the same source.)

Another interesting piece from the same provenance, a US cover, mailed from Zanesville, OH, to Cassopolis, MI. The special thing about it is the use of a parcel post roller cancel.

All, what is the philatelic term for this type of cover? It is a prepaid reply envelope, with a preprinted embossed stamp. It's a recent eBay purchase that I found while searching for advertising covers. But I don't think one can really describe it as such as there is no actual advertising.
