United States: 2014 Cover, bearing die-cut stamp from www.stamps.com with simulated perfs. Anyone know what the reader icon with the little squares is known as? Do the public have access to a reader that will translate this? Thanks.

Anyone aware if the 1935 Norona's General Catalog of United States Postmarks is available free online as a PDF? I wasn't able to find a copy. As a generalization, American books are only in the public domain if they were published prior to 1923 (although it's possible the above is also in the public domain if it was not renewed when its original copyright was set to expire after 28 years). Here's some info on the mess that is US copyright, with many more links to much more grief. Yeesh, what a mess. And you can bet that as soon as Mickey Mouse is about to revert into the public domain, the laws will change again! ha ha Ryan

Do the public have access to a reader that will translate this? This is a type of two-dimensional barcode known as a Data Matrix. I'm sure there are many online services available that can read the codes if you provide an image file - here's the first one I found on a quick search. Ryan

I was just going to put this in the UK Postmarks thread and then I noticed that it may be from the US even though I can't find a Bath, Missouri. But there is a Durham, Maine. Can anyone verify my assumptions? This one from Bath has no year date that is obvious. Any guesses as to the approx year of this one?

Doesn't the writing at the top left say Bath Me (Maine) under the cancellation? It looks the same as the Durham Me (Maine) in the address.

Go to wiki Type in Bath wiki Scroll down to places in the US There are 16 "Bath" locations in the US None in Maine, but perhaps you will recognise one suitable.

retroreveal.org/ Everyone should bookmark this tool and use it. Really helps to show that hard to read text.

jaysee, good one. thanks for identifying that postmark. That's definitely Bath, Me. And Bath is very close to Durham so that fits nicely ! I'm going to post one in the UK Postmarks thread. I just registered at retroReveal - Nice Site ! and tried it out but still can't get this one - it's a tough one that I've had for awhile but would love to identify.

For Rod222, the 1935 Norona catalog may be available through Interlibrary Loan at little or no cost. I have found that, in general, philatelists know nothing about Interlibrary services, and thus miss out on the chance to check out rare and elusive reference books, etc. Your library can do a global search in 30 seconds, and spell out the terms for you; sometimes they pick up the incoming postage.
Last year, I got a catalog of Kentucky coal-mining tokens, only 3 copies in the world, in libraries at least, and used it 3 weeks, and paid only $2 postage to return it. Resources like this are WIDELY available, and librarians are dying to tell you about it. Do NOT call your library. GO IN. It helps if you have a printed-out citation from a bibliography, or a Google hit, but not mandatory.

Actually, there have been 35 Post Offices named Bath, according to Jim Forte's postal history website. In Maine, there was a "Bath" in two different counties, although that one appears to be a case of one county splitting into two. If you want to see sleazy 19th Century politics at its absolute worst, read about a case of such splitting. Here's the URL showing the 35, by state, then by county: www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp?task=display&searchtext=bath&state=&county=&searchtype=wordThere is also a geographical website, www.placesnamed.com that's useful for tracking post offices.
