Egypt issued a stamp to commemorate the Suez Canal but used an image of the Panama Canal. I was wondering if this stamp was actually sold to the public or if the error was caught before release?

I had a look at the Egyptian postal service website and with the help of Google Translate (I don't think I'll ever be able to make heads or tails out of Arabic script) I found this relating to the Suez Canal issue:

Postal Authority stopped the launch of the new character of the Suez Canal to review and modify the design to be launched within days

Minister of Communications and Information Technology commissioned a committee headed by Acting Chairman of the Commission to review the mechanism of ratification of the designs to begin its work immediately and issued instructions work with urgent investigations take the necessary actions

A snoop through current eBay listings shows that the stamp showing the Panama Canal was released - there are plenty of items for sale. Here's a screen grab showing the original release and the quickly issued replacement.
