This thread needs a bump anyway!! received today- someone ( Londonbus1 Beryllium Guy ?) posted elsewhere recently about a lot which had forgeries. The diagonal overprint caught my etye and I discovered I had none, nor did I have the 5M.. the horizontal overprints I have (multiples of some). Hope these aren't also forgeries!

Hi, Stan ( stainlessb)! Thanks for your post. You are right, I was the one who recently posted about Danzig overprint forgeries here: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/7406/danzig-overprints-genuine-forgeryAs it happens, I now have all of those auction lot stamps in my possession. I bought them from the dealer as forgeries, but I probably still paid more than I should have. Ah, well. He is a nice guy, so I am OK with giving him a break, especially during these tough times. I am planning to go through those two lots, and I will post detailed scans, which will be a big improvement over the poor-quality photos that the dealer sent me prior to the auction. I would like to get some high-resolution scans of your overprints for comparison to mine, so I will PM you with my contact info, if you are interested. The only thing left for me to decide is whether to do this project as a series of posts in one of these threads, or if I should turn it into a TSF Newsletter article? Any comments on that are welcome! ( tomiseksj or Londonbus1?)

While scanning Danzig overprints for Chris ( Beryllium Guy ) I noticed the surcharged overprints with 1M or more have a web-like background over the entire stamp (Burelage according to one site, and it's in several colors of ink apparently) ... I only have the 3 examples and I cannot find it on non-overprinted.

Hello! sorry to interrupt this discussion, but i would like to ask fellow members a question: I have been buying lots of canceled Danzig stamps in the auctions of the Brazilian |Philatelic Club. I aim to separate the ones with good cancelations, (e.g. place and date legible) and would like to mount in an order that I haven't decided yet.Any ideas, hints? Thanks to all!.

ausbrasilien you could approach it as a calendar, or by city/village of postmark, though I find specific information about Danzig limited. The world is your oyster! I did notice just now my last post, all 3 stamps appear to have the same date?!?

It's an excellent point about the date, Stan ( stainlessb). To me, it could mean a variety of things: - All the stamps originally came from the same cover
- The postmark could be CTO or philatelic and many were franked on the same day
- I suppose that this could also be an indication that the postmarks may not be genuine, but I am not sure
- Perhaps other reasons?
So, not really sure what it is telling us, but it's got me thinking, which can be a dangerous thing!

As a matter of facts, the various german ArGes (Arbeite-gemaineshatfs? Workgroups?) are a source of reference for many many branches of philately... German is a language that must be studied...

Collecting Danzig can be quiet tricky.
