I've shown this elsewhere, but the 3sh aniline bright violet could find a home here: John Easton gives this issue a thumbs down in his book, British Postage Stamp Design, but I rather like it.

I'll have to look that up in Easton's Tome. 2 more of your favourite Monarch (The scroll work is immediately recognisable from GB stamps) Since moving to Hawid mounts, the decision to wash gum has been eased, but these types of stamps still have me in a dilemma. Do I wash? The Gum is evidence of Improper Storage? Tropical Gum? Normal deterioration ?

If I recall correctly, Easton said the lower KGV denominations, posted above by rod, have the look of a beer label. (He was writing in the 1940's.) Can't completely disagree about that one...

Can't completely disagree about that one... ....and yet, I quite like this design (spoilt by a rigid Elephant with square ears) (I do not have Easton's design book, rather Easton's "Postage Stamps in the Making") Others in the negative were William Finlay (Pen name of James Mackay ) (I was never keen on the small format Falklands issues of KGV)

The Stamps of Gambia 1922-1961
The Gambia Colony and Protectorate became a part of the British Empire during the New Imperialism era. It was administrated from 1821 to 1965.
The Colony was the immediate area surrounding Bathurst (now Banjul). The Protectorate was the inland territory situated around the Gambia river after declaration in 1894.
The colony was founded at Fort James and Bathurst where British presence was established in 1815 and 1816, respectively. For various periods during its existence Gambia was subordinate to the Sierra Leone Colony. By 1888, however; it had become a colony in its own right with a permanently appointed Governor.
As many as three million people may have been taken as slaves from this general region during the three centuries the transatlantic slave trade operated. It's not known how many people were taken either by intertribal wars or Muslim traders before the trade began. Most of those taken were sold by other Africans to Europeans; some were prisoners of intertribal wars; some were victims sold because of unpaid debts, many others were simply victims of kidnapping.
The boundaries of the territory were an issue of contention between the British and French authorities due to the proximity to French Senegal. In addition to this, on numerous occasions, the British government attempted to exchange The Gambia with France for other territories, such as those on the upper Niger River.
In 1899, France and Britain agreed in principle to set the boundary at 10 km north and south of the river and east to Yarbutenda, the furthest navigable point on the river Gambia. This was followed by the dispatch of a joint Anglo-French Boundary Commission to map the actual border. However; in 1891 when they arrived in the area, the Commission was met with resistance by local leaders whose territories they were coming to divide. British naval power then bombed the town of Kansala to force the Gambians to back off.
Colonial rule ended in 1965 when The Gambia became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations.
At present, both names, Gambia and The Gambia are in common use.
