Does anyone else collect Japan, either as a major area, a sideline, or as part of a worldwide collection?
I've been collecting Japan for about 25 years as a primary collecting area, but am decidedly no expert, and still have much to learn!
But if I can help answer any questions, or try to id any stamps, or anything else, just post it!
I'm also pretty good at at least identifying the right countries for other Asian stamps that don't have Roman script on them, so feel free to post those as well!

Hi Dave, I guess I would have what was categorized as a small Japan collection as part of my worldwide holdings but I haven't inventoried it yet so I'm not sure what I have. I recently picked up a number of Japan first day covers and cards and am struck by the beauty of some of the issues and the cancels. For example, here are two cards with stamps from the National Parks issue (Scott 911 and 912, issued July 10, 1967):

Hi, Steve -- Thanks for posting! Those are some nice first day cards/covers. Japan has a history of those commemorative cancels -- oftentimes for first day cancels, but some commemorating other events as well. I don't know that much about them, other than to recognize their distinctive style, but I always enjoy seeing them! Feel free to post more!

Thanks. Here are a few more cards. The first two are Scott 830 and 831, issued January 20, 1965. The second two are Scott 834 and 835, issued March 15, 1965.

And so I don't overstay my welcome, my final additions (at least for now). The first image is of Scott 938 and 939, issued November 27, 1967; the second is of Scott 968 and 969, issued September 16, 1968.

Edith, you should really be looking at Steiner pages. My Liberia pages are from there and quite nice. Two options you can order the complete download or have them print and ship specific pages.I think Liberia ended up costing me like $15.With the complete download you get most WW countries usable at anytime you need them.Last I looked about $60 for the complete world.Of course your ink adds to the cost as will the paper stock.

Edith, firstfrog2013 's recommendation regarding Steiner pages is one to consider. For $40 you have the ability to download any or all of his worldwide pages for an entire year. $60 gets you the year's worth of downloads plus all of the .pdf files on a CD. This gives you the ability to print only those pages that you need. Here is an example of one of his Japan pages. If you'd prefer, you can download several different types of blank pages from his website at no cost.

These look pretty close to perfect! I will do a bit more digging to figure out whether I want to get the DVD or not, but this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions. I am getting the Steiner pages on CD (because large downloads are akin to a mortal sin in my house) for my birthday. I can hardly wait!

Hello! I'm curious about the story of the Japanese 'lottery prize' stamps. I see them alluded to in Scott catalogue, but I'd love more context.
For example, the Daruma Doll, Scott 606 is listed as being issued in sheets of 4 awarded as fifth prize in the national lottery.
Were these issued as regular stamps and then the sheets reissued? What type of lottery offered a stamp sheet as a prize? Is there any way to tell what fourth place received?
Are these the same as the New Year's greeting card series or is that a different series?
I find these long running series fascinating and like to consider them as a group.

Were these issued as regular stamps and then the sheets reissued? What type of lottery offered a stamp sheet as a prize? Is there any way to tell what fourth place received? Are these the same as the New Year's greeting card series or is that a different series? I'm a little short on time this evening, but can give perhaps a cursory answer tonight, and can dig into it a little more tomorrow if there's interest. Yes, exactly! The stamps are issued as regular sheets of stamps in the last months of one year so that they can be used to mail New Year's cards. The lottery sheets (looks like a souvenir sheet), if I recall correctly, aren't distributed until January of the new year. As you noted, there are also New Year's postal cards, which people also use to send New Year's greetings, rather than buying and using commercial New Year's cards. I'll need to double-check this, but, for the most part, one could buy postal cards that had a unique lottery number printed on them, or could buy 'plain' New Year's postal cards. I can't give you dates off the top of my head (and this entire answer is being written off the top of my head; I just can't check references tonight), but the lottery postal cards and have been around for decades. A more recent invention is New Year's postage stamps with a unique lottery number printed on them. Both the numbered cards and stamps are both entries in that national lottery. If someone else hasn't answered it, I'll try to provide some explanatory links tomorrow. I hope this is a little bit helpful towards answering your questions!

Oh wow, this is fascinating stuff. Thanks rod222 and Philatarium, I'm set for a cozy evenings reading now. 💖 This whole idea of having stamps and cards with a lotto number on them for the recipient seems genius. I wonder why more countries don't do this!

Hi Dave i didnt realize you have had this thread running for so long.
Yes indeed I started collecting Japan stamps around 1966, and am still at it.
My collection now lives in four Scott Green bound Albums. I decided not to go much past 2012 as Japan has started spamming stamps out like the dickens and i just am not interested in all of the sheets they issue that Scott does not allow us to post parts of. We have to have the sheet or nothing. My collection is pretty solid up to 2007 or so but am going to fill in some gaps was away from it for a while. Hope you are donig well and thanks for this thread and your contirubutions here.I have enjoyed the conversations I have had here, and will try to post a bit more but have been busy with other work this year, but it is never too late to enjoy sharing about Japanese stamps, so many of them are beautiful and very easy to get excited about.
cheers Chris
