I have just booked my flight to the UK for May and will be in London between the dates shown. It is stated to be the biggest Philatelic Exhibition in Europe from now until 2020. www.london2015.net/I hope to join in some of the events and it promises to be a busy 4 days. I will be at the Cinderella Stamp Club meeting on the Wednesday and at the RPSL Open day on the Thursday. Away from the Exhibition, my favourite UK Stamp Fair will be extended until 6pm on the Friday to accommodate the extra 'traffic'. I need to save my pennies !! There will be special displays of the Penny Black and a Sperati Forgery Press. There will be a day of Confederate issues discussions, displays and seminars. An auction will take place within the Exhibition arena on the Saturday for all to take part.....and much more. When should I start to get excited ? That's the question. If any UK members are around [do we even have any?], then let your hair down and add a post here ! Europhilexbus1

Glad the packages arrived safely. I look forward to your write-up. I have just now managed to get myself a free ticket for the first day ! At all major Internationals in the UK, the first day is always by admission only. A good start. Yes, the Charing X collectors market will be on the agenda early morning of the 16th !! Looking forward to that too.

Not sure they'll be many, or even any Cinderella goodies. At the last biggie in 2010 there was next to nothing except the reproductions ! [Almost forgot about those]. But let's see, there might be a surprise. I can always revert to making up an album or two of ephemera like I did 5 years ago !! I still look lovingly at those albums every month or so and remember.......

I have been receiving daily updates about the show and the latest has had me chomping at the bit !! Recently discovered after 80 years, on show at Europhilex will be the copper printing plate for the 'Post Office' Mauritius stamps, last seen in public at the 1935 Jubilee Exhibition at the Royal Philatelic Society. This is a 'Wow' addition to the event ! Also on display, as mentioned earlier, will be the printing Press used by Jean [Giovanni] de Sperati. Some Perkins Bacon dies will be used to produce reprints which will be available from the RPSL Museum area. So the Cinderella collectors will not be forgotten after all !! Saving pennies, saving pennies, saving pennies, saving.........

I remember some chowderhead thinking it would be nice to have a cross gutter block with the marginal inscription for the event. Not an item that Royal Mail bagged up as a souvenir. Can you imagine? Talking a counter worker at a festival post office out of a block across two panes? And yet... I'm sure they're out there, but I've never seen another. The 'bus, he does deliver!

I'll be in touch frog about your 'wish list' ! Now I have a dilemma ! I have been a good boy and not bid on anything for 2 weeks, nor am I looking...well, not seriously anyway. I am saving my pennies/cents/agorot for the big event but something has just happened ! I have these saved searches on eBay, Delcampe etc and they arrive daily in my email inbox. I have not been looking at them much lately but just opened one up for British Philatelic Exhibitions. Now, I have not added to this collection in an age, very little on offer or just too expensive for what it is. Until today ! What should pop up on that saved search but an item I have NEVER seen on offer, expensive [still 9 days to go and already at £17-8 bids] but possibly quite unique. The seller does not send to Israel but I have written to him and he will send to a UK address for me so am free to bid. The question is, to bid or not to bid ? To delve into the Europhilex budget or not ? To try to win an item I may never see again or let it pass me by ? You see, it IS a dilemma. What would you do if you were in a similar situation ? Taking into account a limited budget and a 4-day Philatelic Extravaganza. Oh dear.

Oooh, tough choice. A bird in hand, versus the almost limitless possibilities of the 4-day Philatelic Extravaganza?
If it was me, I would set my max, hope to win, pick it up on the trip if I did win, and flip it at Europhilex if I came across something I just had to have even more.
Maybe it will be bid up to silly money and you won't even feel bad about missing out. Hard to think of that as a good result, I know...

A hard call Bus. You could always do the rod222 plan, live on boiled potatoes and rice for the rest of the month . The hardness part of our hobby is discipline but sometimes something comes across that will throw any discipline you have out the window. Only you can make that call. What cjd said is a option you should consider.

I wasn't going to answer this, until Jack chimed in. Advising people what to do with their money is fraught with chicanes, I recall answering a post, where the poster asked what his stamps were worth. I took a shot across my bows for my trouble. I work to a budget, I save a certain amount each week, (Like my power bill, which is $230 in credit) I don't mind overdrawing on the account, but I will not bid more than 10 weeks in advance. (If I save $10 a week on stamps, I'll bid to a max of $100 in debit) A while ago I bought Londonbus' library Books, and I went into debit, some time later, a stamp came up for auction, I really wanted, it had a Catalogue value of $15,000 I did not bid, and it sold for $29 Sometimes you just gotta suck it up. I like to have a reasonable credit amount in my stamp "mojo" account. I like to feel in charge. Tread your own path.

On further reflection....... Does one encourage another to go into debt, or miss out on a rarity ? A tough call

Wow Rod, it sounds like someone got a bargain. Now I am wondering if I would have let such an item go for that amount. My 'dilemma' post was also, in small part, a fun post, just see what others might do in a similar situation. Thanks to all for your replies and suggestions. Frog, I'll be writing to you a bit later ! I have not often been a situation like that, because in all my collecting days I have never been too bothered about such things.' I have them or I don't' has most often been my feeling. I know I will never be complete in such a collection as the British Philatelic Exhibition Cinderellas but it appears there are one or two items in this field that I get excited about and this was, after all, the first time I had seen it for sale. It just happened to be before a trip to the UK and an Exhibition !! In the end, I got clearance to bid from the seller so in a mad rush of adrenalin, I did !! If I win then great, if not, then life goes on and we are none the wiser. Nice thought from cjd to bid and win then if I find something I want more in London, then sell it. Thing is, this item IS number 1 on my list !! Thanks again to all. Londonbus1

Hey! Good luck with your bid Michael. It was extraordinary. I had seen it before a few years earlier, from the same vendor He / she offered a Scinde dawke, with no reserve I never did find out what that was knocked down to. I know our Admin here favours "no reserve" items to increase bidding membership, I am of the other school, I like Insurance on big ticket items With an obscure country, sometimes you have to dangle the bait longer.

Jack, just because it's green, doesn't mean it's Irish ! That's an old London Country Bus which was transferred for a duration to London Transport and ran from Victoria Station to Clapton Pond near Hackney in East London ! I remember those when I was a kiddie ! Now go and find a Dublinbus !! wannabedublinbus1foraday !

Royal Mail have announced their 'goodies' for May and the Exhibition. A Miniature sheet with two first class 'Penny Blacks' and two first class 'twopenny Blues' is one of them and will be issued on May 6th to coincide with the 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black. At the Exhibition, in a Limited Edition Presentation Pack, the sheet will be overprinted for 'Europhilex' on the block margins and this item is only available at the show. Royal Mail announced that it was one way of getting collectors to go and visit the Exhibition. I believe 7,500 will be available, some of which will be offered to attending dealers. Of course there will not be enough to go around !! I do not know how many the punters can buy but I will be after a few or more and will offer one here in a special giveaway. The overprinted sheets on cover will be scarce so that is also a possibility. I will thunk on it ! In addition to the PB sheet, a Generic sheet containing 10 of each will be available. [At £12+ a time, I might pass on this one]. There is a new Commemorative Issue, The Centenary of the Great War [WWI] and an Heraldic Animals ATM set of 6 which looks hugely attractive. Both issued during the show. All of these will have special cancellations and there will be a different Exhibition cancel for each of the 4 days. Do you want more? PS: OK, there is also a Penny Black Self-Adhesive Booklet.

Just arrived today, the Opening Day Admission Ticket saving me a whopping £10 ! Courtesy of the organizer of the Cinderella Stamp Club meeting which is being held on that first day. A nice bit of encouragement in my eyes, much like RM's effort to get collectors to go to the Exhibition. Made my day.
