The first handstruck stamps were introduced during the Napoleonic occupation 1798-1800. There were four straight-line types, ALEXANDRIE, LE CAIRE, BENESOUEF and SIOUTH.
The first postal system was organized in 1821 by an Italian, Carlo Meratti, and the early handstamps are all inscribed in Italian. The service was granted a Government sanction to provide inland mail services in 1857, and on 1 January 1865 the Government assumed control.
