On the other hand…
Many posts on this thread remind everyone that trains can be cute. Maybe the most successful alternative to grandeur is cuteness. And there is a lot of cuteness with trains; Thomas, the Little Engine that Could and my wife's collection of Brio. It's easy to see why. The key to ‘cute’ is infant-like characteristics. A locomotive with a disproportionately large cab and a small boiler reminds us of an infant’s large head and small body. The windows open like eyes.
And cuteness flips the normal design rules from the 1930s and '40s. Detail suddenly works wonderfully. It calls attention to the pint-sized dimensions of the locomotive, giving it an embrace of place and location. Details that looked crowded or distracting when surrounding an adult figure are warm and reassuring around a juvenile. Our response to adult and baby locomotives seems no different. Detail makes a little engine look at home, even loved. In reality, of course, even a tiny narrow-gauge locomotive is a big chunk of iron. But we’re talking images on stamps.

Below are the most recent U.S. applicable to this topical area -- a three stamp series commemorating the 150th anniversary of completion of the first transcontinental railroad across the U.S. which connected the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory on May 10, 1869. The scan doesn't clearly reflect that the frames of the Jupiter and No. 119 stamps as well as the central Golden Spike stamp are printed in gold. The forever stamps (55c) printed by Banknote Corporation of America were issued on May 10, 2019 at Promontory Summit and issued in panes of 18 stamps.

Yes....many thanks for the link. Anglobob Technically, that sheet is not part of the "French Philatelic Heritage" series (the French Post had been issuing a set of 11 sheets in that series every year, 1 of which is reserved for subscription customers), but rather issued as part of the National Stamp Show held that year. I had a second copy but Beryllium Guy snatched it already...

Here is another for the "Trains on Stamps" category and although not a train, but a train car; it is plate number strip '1' of the 21c Railroad Mail Car from the US Transportation Coils series (Scott No. 2265)
On a side note, but related, I was looking through the catalogue of Universal Philatelic Auctions for their upcoming sale (no financial affiliation) and noted that of the 130 thematic lots listed, 85% of them were railway theme related.
Who knew trains and stamps together were so popular? At least from this one data point...

Canada's Scott No. 460, the 6¢ black stamp from the Centennial Definitives series (1967-1973) was issued in 1970. This pair with its blind perforations and Winnipeg Centre Bar ( WCB or W1) tagging depicts a train as part of its overall transportation theme.

Mauritius must have recently inaugurated a tramway system (which looks a lot like the modern French ones) as this issue attests:

Yesterday, I received the stamps from renden's recent giveaway ( again!). I'll show off a few stamps in their appropriate thematic threads for posterity. Here are two Danish stamps issued in 1947 for the centennial of the Danish Railways:

How timely: I just finished mounting my Canal Zone stamps and this thread reminded me that I ran across a CZ stamp with a train. Scott 147, issued on January 28, 1955, to commemorate the centenary completion of the Panama railroad and the transcontinental railroad trip in the Americas (from the Scott cat). Interesting is the fact that only 994,000 were printed, which to me is not a large number for a postage stamp. And still, it's almost a minimum CV stamp. Didn't notice until I scanned it, but it looks like it might have some kind of special cancel as well. Pretty cool.
