The De Havilland DH-4 was the principal aircraft used in the United States when air mail service began in 1918. The aircraft was featured on this 24c carmine, perf. 11 stamp issued in 1923 (Scott C6).

1st Trans-Pacific Flight -- U.S. Mainland to AustraliaThe Southern Cross, a modified Fokker F.VIIb/3m trimotor monoplane made the first trans-Pacific flight to Australia from the U.S. mainland in 1928. The plane was piloted by Australians Charles Kingsford-Smith and Charles Ulm; the American crew consisted of navigator Harry Lyons and radio operator James Warner. The plane departed Oakland, California on May 31, 1928 and landed in Brisbane, Australia on June 9th. Refueling/rest stops were made in Hawaii and Fiji. On April 19, 1978 Australia issued this souvenir sheet commemorating the 50th anniversary of that historic flight flown by two of its aviation pioneers (Scott 675a). The Southern Cross has been preserved and resides at the Charles Kingsford-Smith Memorial in Brisbane. Source: Wikipedia Commons; Author Kgbo

TU-144 The First Flying SSTThe TU-144 took to the air 2 months before the Anglo/French Concorde and on June 5, 1969 it broke the sound period for the first time. Only a month and ten days later the TU-144 became the first commercial aircraft to travel more than twice the speed of sound. Similar in appearance to the Concorde the TU-144 was designed and built by the Tupolev Design Bureau. While still undergoing development a TU-144 crashed at the Paris Airshow in 1973. Finally introduced into passenger service on November 1, 1977 the airliner suffered another blow when another TU-144 crashed while being delivered. After only 55 scheduled flights the TU-144 as a passenger fleet was grounded. In use as a cargo plane until 1983 the TU-144 completed only 102 commercial flights. The aircraft continued in use as a test bed for both the Soviet and American space agencies until 1999. In all there were 17 aircraft constructed in 6 variations of the TU-144 and its only 2 operators were the Soviet Ministry of Aviation Production and Aeroflot. Here's an example of a postcard flown on the first United Kingdom Aerial Post flight in 1911. The message acknowledges a donation made to the fund by a Miss Fulton : Here's a little more background detail: First United Kingdom Aerial Post

"China Clipper"China Clipper, the first Martin M-130 four engine flying boat built for Pan American Airlines, was used to inaugurate the first transpacific air mail service from San Francisco, CA to Manila, Philippines. This 25 cent blue, perf. 11 stamp (Scott C20) commemorates the inauguration of that service on November 22, 1935.

Here's my latest first flight cover with a fine array of cachets. It was flown from Shanghai with China National Aviation Company (CNAC) and then transferred to the China Clipper service of Pan American Airways (FAM14) at Hong Kong. It was then flown on its long journey to San Francisco. Leaving Shanghai on 26th April 1937, it reached San Francisco on 4th May and took a further 3 days to Maplewood, New Jersey. It would be interesting to establish which type of aircraft flew the Shanghai-Hong Kong leg and also the San Francisco-New Jersey leg. CNAC apparently used Douglas DC2's (or DC3's), for internal flights, although other aircraft were in service. I think the Chinese PAA cachet is somewhat misleading as it shows an image of a clipper, which would only have been used for the Pacific leg of the journey. From the little information I have so far found about CNAC, it appears to have quite a history worth looking into including being 45% owned by Pan AM. Here are the backstamps:

That's a nice Trans Tasman cover. Interesting that the flight actually didn't take place until the 17th February; so this was sent to Auckland well in advance. Here's a good write-up about the flight and a bit of information about the pilot, Charles Ulm: First Trans-Tasman Airmail

One of my favourite stamp sets is the American Airmail stamps issued in the summer of 1947. The 3 value set features prominent aircraft and landmarks of the time. The stamps were printed by rotary press and are perforated 11 x 10½. The 10¢ value features the Martin 2-0-2 and the Pan American Union Building in Washington DC. The Martin 2-0-2 first flew in November of 1946 and was built as an intended replacement for the venerable DC-3. With a production run of only 47 aircraft, these aircraft were in operation until the mid-1970s. The major operators of the 2-0-2 were Northwest Orient Airlines, LAN Chile and Trans World Airlines. The Pan American Union Building was built between 1908 and 1910. The cornerstone was laid on May 11, 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, and Andrew Carnegie. The headquarters of the Organization of American States, it hosted the initial meeting of the International Labour Organization in 1919 and the Washington Naval Conference of 1921. A Lockheed Constellation and the New York skyline are shown on the 15¢ value. The Lockheed Constellation was first flown in 1943. The “Connie” first served as a military transport before becoming a civilian airliner. 856 Constellations were built and the aircraft were used from their introduction until the 1990s. A “Connie” was Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidential aircraft. Major operators were Trans World Airlines, Eastern Airlines, Pan Am and Air France. There are few views that are as iconic as the New York skyline. We can see the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and many more buildings. Finally the 25¢ value shows us a Boeing Stratocruiser flying over the Golden Gate San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. The Stratocruiser was first flown on July 8th 1947 and was based on the Stratofreighter which was derived from the Superfortress. With only 59 aircraft built the Stratocruiser was one of, if not the most luxurious airliner of this period. Major operators were Pan Am, BOAC and Northwest Orient Airlines. Opened in 1936, the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge is constructed from suspension, truss and cantilever bridge types. It spans 23,000 feet between San Francisco and Alameda counties. That 25 cent blue stamp does not show the Golden Gate Bridge. Perhaps the Bay Bridge?

Another first flight cover that travelled via the FAM14 Clipper route. This time from Manila, in the Philippines to Hong Kong and then through to San Francisco. It has twin cachets, one of which is a very crisp embossed ink Hong Kong - Macao version. This has obviously been looked after over the years; 80 to be precise.
