Pair of stamps issued by Togo in 1976, and remembering the Sara-Kawa plane crash of 24 January 1974. Then-president Eyadema was on the plane but survived. Note the quotes around the word "accident" on the stamps, clearly indicating the official doubts as to the true nature of the event.  |

There is so much great stuff here already. I hope this on is new. Here is Monaco C64(Scott), from May of 1964. It was the high value of the great aircraft set of 1964. Here is the imperforate variety. The aircraft is the Convair B-58 Hustler. Those of you that missed the Cold War might not remember the B-58, but it was one heck of an airplane. Capable of sustained mach 2 flight, the Hustler held several records. Maximum speed was 1319 mph, max climb was 17,400 feet per minute. This stamp commemorates a New York-Paris record set in 1961: 3 hours, 19 minutes, 41 seconds.  |

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I've been updating my Aircraft on Stamps collection lately and recently drew up a page including these aircraft stamps from Nicaragua in 1954. This is a composite set in that it excludes personalities, insignia, and hangars as the central motif and includes stamps from both the regular postage and airmail sets. It is also a short set in that I lack the 50 centavos airmail stamp depicting AT-6 Texans in flight. The Scott numbers are, regulars: 755-786 and airmails: C346-C352
The stamps, overall, lack detail of the aircraft depicted, but coming from a central American country not know for its aviation history, they are worthy of collection. These stamps also seem hard to come by. I don't know if they are scarce or just too inexpensive for dealers to list for sale. It took me a long time to accumulate even this short set and my chances of finding the single 50 centavos AT-6 airmail are about the same as winning the lottery. Anyone have an extra 50 centavos stamp??

Here is a recently completed page for my Aircraft on Stamps collection, Rhodesia Sc. 408-413. I show it here for the high value, the 25 cents stamp identified as issued as a Boeing 720B. The 720 was a scaled down version of the Boeing 707. It was more economical to operate on short to medium length routes and could go into airports with shorter runways. What I find interesting about the choice of the 720 for a stamp subject is that it is the only aircraft of Boeing's jet passenger designs where the numerical designator does not end with a '7,' i.e 707, 727, 737. etc.

In the 1980s, hang gliding became a popular sport here in the United States. Wikipedia describes a hang glider as "a light, non-motorized foot-launched heavier-than-air aircraft." I've never tried hang gliding, but I do collect them on stamps and include them in my Aircraft on Stamps collection. The Stanley Gibbons Collect Aircraft on Stamps, 2nd ed., catalog lists twelve countries as having issued hang glider stamps, with Romania being the leader with as set of six different models issued in 1982 during the height of their popularity. This set is shown below.
I have only one other hang glider stamp at present, the one issued by Brazil, Sc. 2305 to commemorate the 8th world hang gliding championship. There is a world championship completion held every two years hosted by different countries. Don StampHinger  |
