Germany's 2005 issue showing a Super Constellation in flight. Issued on March 3, 2005 Scott #2331 : Michel #2450 I remember way back in the late 70's of being a weather observer stationed at CFB Summerside, Prince Edward Island. There was an AWACS version of the Super Connie there for an airshow. They delayed their take-off probably due to the crew touring the area. The day he was scheduled to depart, we were in a heat wave. The runway wasn't quite long enough to allow a safe take-off. Nix on the next day, two... The crew showed up one day early in the morning & decided they had to go. Their calculations said 8,000 feet were needed, and our runway was 8,001 feet long! Instead of slanting up for the last third, the runway sloped down. As he was racing down the runway, he completely disappeared from view at the weather office. Then... there he was, very slowly climbing into the sky heading on to his next orders. I didn't have my camera, so I missed photo's. I've liked the Super Connie ever since. |

Among the new issues from New Caledonia, a stamp featuring two "Aircalin" airplanes. Aircalin is the local Neo-Caledonian airline. Its name translates roughly into "Hug Air". Also worthy of note, this is the first occurrence I see of a New Caledonian stamp bearing "Local" as its denomination. Other issues from this last semester have "International" instead of the price. I don't know if stamp face value is inflating as fast in New Caledonia as in Metropolitan France, where we just got hit with another 11c rate increase for domestic mail (after the same last year), so that now basic postage exceeds one Euro, but if it is, I see the value for customers to start issuing such non-denominational values.  |

Joining Monaco and France, French Polynesia also issued a stamp, and a souvenir sheet, to remember the balloon post used to circumvent the siege of Paris in 1870. One of the balloons made it all the way to Norway, apparently.  |
