The main post office in Enna (Sicily), Italy. Enna sits atop a 1,000-metres high hill in the centre of Sicily. It is Italy's highest provincial capital atop a hill. Behind the post is a deep gorge with the town of Calascibetta atop a somewhat lower hill on the other side of it. Many countries have issued stamps depicting Ceres, who is also considered the Roman equivalent to Demeter. In early Roman times, Enna was one of the most important pilgrimage sights devoted to Demeter. The town had an important temple devoted to her. Nearby is Sicily's only lake, where Demeter's daughter Persephone was abducted, leading to the seasons.

The post office in Erice (Sicily), Italy, a town about five kilometres from the shore as the crow flies at an altitude of ca. 750 metres. Some Roman Historians claim the town was founded by Aeneas (from Troy), the ancestor of Romulus, founder of Rome.

The post office on the island of Ortigia, the ancient city of Syracuse's old town (Sicily). When I got to Ortigia, I had run out of stamps I had bought in Taormina. I spent Another € 24 on stamps postcards.

A picture taken in August 2022 during a trip to Cheb, a Czech town on the German border. Just after the fall of the iron curtain, but a few days before visas were abolished, I travelled by train to Prague. After changing trains in Nürnberg, the train crossed the border at Cheb and stood therefor hours until a border guard arrived to check passports and visas. The train arrived several hours late in Prague. Years after that trip, I read about the town and its history. It made me decide to return there and discover this interesting town. The post office just off the main square in the old town of Cheb (Czech Republic). They had some old souvenire sheets on display. After taking care of the usual batch of stamps to stick on postcards, the lady who served me was so kind to get me two of the souvenir sheets issued in 2018.

As explained in one of the threads about Andorra (Spanish administration stamps), in the Middle Ages, the Count of Foix was co-prince of Andorra. The arms of that principality encompass the arms of Foix. The lineage married into the Béarn viscounts' dynasty. Consequently, the arms of Béarn also appear in that of Andorra. In November 2021, I visited the cathedral in La Seu d'Urgell. There is a frequent local bus service to Escaldes-Engordany in Andorra from the city. The principality is ruled by two co-princes. One is the bishop of La Seu d'Urgell. The other is the president of the French Republic as successor to the Kings of France. They received the title as heirs to the Counts of Foix. Having visited the home of one of the Andorran princes, and the principality, there was just one thing left to do: visit the Counts of Foix. They, graciously, received me at their castle. Of course, not before making me part with admittance. Whilst in town, I bought some postcards and stamps to stick on them so they, actually, would make their way to my friends. I took the picture of the main post office in the town of Foix at the foot of the French Pyrenees in August 2022.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

While on a walking tour of the historic district of Melaka, Malaysia today I asked the guide if the post office was in one of the old Dutch buildings. She pointed out a building built in 1931 from the British period that is now an art gallery. The British had kept the old Dutch buildings and this newer building was tastefully built in a similar style. linkAs an aside the members that collect Cape of a Good hope may be interested to know that the wife of the founder of Cape Town was originally buried in this city. She died after giving birth to a child there. The original tomb stone was moved to Cape Town in 1915 to be beside the grave of her husband John Van Riebeck. Sadly there had been a stamp museum in the area that never reopened after the pandemic. It is now being converted into an eating and entertaining facility.

Plasencia post office. The main post office in Plasencia (Cáceres province in the autonomy of Extremadura). The city's two cathedrals have appeared on stamps and miniature sheets. In November 1922, I visited a some Spanish towns. That was a good reason to pop into the local post office to buy some more stamps, especially for the 'D' tariff. Plasencia's post office was the only one that had these stamps. Being almost the end of the year, these 'D' tariff stamps would remain valid for postcards to Russia if the tariff had been increased at the beginning of 1923. So, I stocked up on those stamps.

The post office in La Puebla de Santa María de Guadalupe (Guadalupe) also in Cáceres Province of Spain. The village is situated on a hillside in a UNESCO Georpark (Villuercas - Ibores - Jara). It is famous for its (enormous) monastery where the Black Madonna of Guadalupe is kept. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is patron saint of the Hispanidad, the Spanish-speaking peoples around the world. It is one of the most important places of Pilgrimage in Spain; probably the second after Santiago de Compostela. The monastery featured on several Spanish stamps. The village is among the 'most beautiful villages of Spain.' Its population is diminishing.

The city of Salamanca in Castilla y León is home to two cathedrals and two universities. It is one of the most monumental cities in Spain. Foreign students come here in large numbers to learn Spanish. The Spanish from Salamanca is considered the purest castilian tongue (comparable to England's Oxford, Germany's Hannover, and the Netherlands' Haarlem). The skyline of Salamanca with its cathedrals, the 'Ponti' university - not to be confused with the famous university from 1228 that is among the oldest in the world -, and San Estéban Monastery is among the most recognisable of Spain's skylines. The view of the 'Roman' bridge over the Tormes River and the cathedrals has been used on stamps.

The post office in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, a French town in the Gironde Department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine, situated just north of Bordeaux. The town lies on the 45th north parallel, situating it equidistant to the North Pole and the equator. The famous oceanographer and filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, on 11 June 1910. He is buried in the town cemetery. I took the picture early in December 1922.

The building stands just inside the Jaffa Gate in the Old City. So if your Postal History interests are in Austrian covers with Jerusalem cancels, this is where they originated !! Londonbus1

The main post office in La Rochelle (early December 1922). The city is famous for its three towers that guarded its mediaeval port. During World War II, the Germans built their indestructable U-boat pens in this city's harbour.

Frankfurt In 1724, Holy Roman-German Emperor asked the imperial Postmaster Prince Anselm Franz von Thurn und Taxis to take up residence in Frankfurt am Main. Between 1731 and 1739, he had a castle built in Frankfurt. In 1748, the castle became the administrative seat of the imperial post office operated by the Thurn und Taxis family. In the same year, the Prince of Thurn und Taxis moved to Regensburg. The Holy Roman-German Empire was dissolved in 1806. When Bavaria took control of its own postal system in 1810, the House of Thurn und Taxis negotiated a postal monopoly within the Deutscher Bund and Frankfurt am Main became its seat. In 1895, Prince Albert I von Thurn und Taxis sold the castle to the Reichspost. The castle was damaged by several bombing raids during World War II. Between 2004 and 2009, it was reconstructed in an altered form. It adjoins the MyZeil shopping centre that was constructed on a site used for decades by the Deutsche Bundespost. (pictures taken mid-December 1922)

Frankfurt This is a Postbank and Deutsche Post corner inside the 'Galleria Karstadt' store on Frankfurt am Main's high street, Zeil. It is about 200 metres from the Goetheplatz and 100 metres from the former Thurn und Taxis palace. This 'post office' has two dispensers for variable value stamps. The second one stands on the other side of the pillar.

There remain few true post offices in Germany. Post Office counters often can be found at Deutsche Postbank branches. This is the branch on the Goetheplatz 6 in the centre of Frankfurt am Main. The square is a few hundred metres from the old town and about 100 metres from the birth house of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In front of the offices, next to the letter boxes stands a dispenser for variable value stamps (Automatenmarken). The picture was taken a week before Christmas 2022. In December, this part of Frankfurt is a big Christmas Market. I can recommend buying a nice big Bretzel covered in a thick layer of dark chocolate (I am not a fan of white or milk (non-)chocolate).

The Palazzo delle Poste (January 2023) in Trieste, Italy was built in eclectic style, in 1894. The architect was Friedrich Selz from Vienna. The building stands on the site of a previous customs building that had been erected on the ancient salt pans. On the lower floor is the Mitteleuropa Postal and Telegraph Museum that opens from 09:00 until 13:00 CET on weekdays. Trieste was an important harbour of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before it became part of Italy after World War I. Among the products that arrived here were coffee beans. Just outside the city is the Illy plant.

Castelló de la Plana is a city in the Valencia Community and capital of the Spanish province of Castellón. It is about 65 kilometres north of the city of Valencia. Until 30 March 2022, the administrative office of Correos in Castelló de la Plana was located in Plaza Tetuán. The building dates to 1932. Its architects are Demetrio Ribés Marco and Joaquín Dicenta Vilaplana. The modernist building shows strong Aragonese Mudéjar influences. The building has three floors. The post office was located on the lower floor. (Pictures late January 2023).

The main post office in St. Mary's Square in Óbidos, Leiria district, Portugal. (Picture taken mid February 2023). The mannerist Aboins manor was built on the order of King João V of Portugal in the middle of the 18th. century. He ordered its construction so the local nobleman Aboins would have a residence worthy to lodge a king. It was refurbished in the 20th. century to house the local post office.

Gràcia, Barcelona (Catalonia) PO on the "Carrer gran" (main street) of the old town, just this morning. Being Saturday, the office was closed as was the street to cars. So, there was a trio playing Mozart...
Perhaps, some around here would recognize it...
