A cover I recently purchased for 99p. The contents were very interesting and very informative, detailing stamps from a 1979 issue: SG622-638. I scanned part of the brochure, along with a pocket calendar.

Does anyone have an example of Scott 188a - Silver Jubilee - bird by the turret? Could this be it?

Fortunately, I have a copy of the Scott Classic Specialized Catalog, otherwise I might have missed it as the standard catalog doesn't mention the variety.

Recent issue set from Barbados for the 150 th anniversary of the Royal Commonwealth Society: This set hits "Flags on Stamps", "Ships on Stamps", and "Maps on Stamps". So this was the only good place to fit them all!

Another arrival this week was this allusive to me Barbados Sc 126. A bath to remove a hinge remnant cleaned it some but I am afraid to go the peroxide route because it already appears a bit faded.

Another question from today's arrival is one I think I already know the answer. This 5 Shilling Scott 43 is a rather hard one to find that is not poorly centered or quite faded. I was contemplating giving it a 3% peroxide bath but considering it's value I am afraid of watching it disappear. I see Stanley Gibbons has a nice one listed and it looks as dirty and yellowish as mine. I am wondering if the off white paper is pretty standard for this stamp and has anyone tried cleaning one?

Thanks for your post, Hugh ( hdm1950). If you are considering how to clean this stamp, I think you should ask tobben63 about his soap treatment or stainlessb about the peroxide. Personally, I have never heard anything about these stamps having fugitive inks, so I imagine that either treatment could help to brighten it up a bit. But let’s see what the specialists can tell us….

There is always a risk of damaging the stamp! I would searched the internet to find specialist on Barbados and asked them what to do.

These stamps (10,000) were printed by Perkins Bacon in 1873. At that time they were not using fugitive inks.
In fact this was one of the reasons they lost their British contract to De La Rue in 1880, their inability to print stamps with fugitive inks.
However, please don't take this as a go-ahead to soak them!

FYIW- thus far, in all the stamps I have subjected to 3% peroxide, none have 'faded' (and we started with a penny black, and a number of other countries earliest stamps). If by chance you have another one of these that is more a 'filler', or for that matter, based on michael 's comment, another stamp from the same series to try.

After careful consideration and reading the comments along with previous positive experiences with 3% Peroxide I decided to take the chance. I left the 5 shilling stamp in the peroxide for 3 minutes watching closely for any change of colour of the fluid. I then soaked it for another 3 minutes in lukewarm soapy water. I then gave it a clear rinse. Photos are using my iPhone in natural light by the window. Pre cleaning. After cleaning procedure I see little if any change. It may actually look a bit more soiled which suggests that the obliterating ink may have run a bit. There is no change in the stamp design colour.
Thanks to all who took part in this discussion.

I would agree, no significant color change, though to my eyes, the bottom and left margins do appear a slight bit ... cleaner ) wish I could get the images side by side...) The obliteration ink looks slightly lighter in color. Does the back look any different?
in the future, IMHO, i would soak in water/detergent before peroxide. The peroxide decomposes quickly* in the presence of organics which the water/soap may remove. also, 10 minutes seems optimal (from 1 minute up to 100 minutes total soak time)
*also in the presence of air so there's no real need to rinse after peroxide.

agree, it does appear that the cancellation ink has 'run' very slightly, unfortunately. The design also appears less sharp, but am sure that's due to the slightly out of focus shot of the 'cleaned' stamp.
