What I collect: Cinderellas and some Ephemera from Great Britain, France and Israel plus a few beautiful bits from elsewhere !! Topical interests include Flags & Judaica, the latter with an emphasis on the Jewish National Fund.

A helping hand ! On it's so-called 'Middle East Flight', the Graf Zeppelin landed in Cairo on April 11th 1931. To Celebrate the occasion, the Egyptian Postal Service overprinted stocks of the 2nd airmail issue of 1929. Shown in another thread about Zeppelins, but it fits in nicely here of course.

Egypt issued a set of 5 airmail stamps to coincide with the December, 1933 International Aviation Congress in Cairo. Printed by the Survey Department in Photogravure, they depict the Armstrong-Whitworth "Atlanta" of Imperial Airways [5m, 10m]; the Dornier Flying Boat [13m,15m] and the Graf Zeppelin [20m]. A Douglas "Dakota" aircraft over the Delta barrage and Farouk. A 1947 issue overprinted 'King of Egypt and the Sudan, 16th October 1951' in January 1952.

The first airmail stamp of Egypt was issued on March 10th, 1926 and shows a De Haviland 'DH 34' over the River Nile. In Deep Violet, Perf 13½. A similarly designed stamp but in Chestnut was issued later [1929, also overprinted 'Graf Zeppelin' [see earlier post]].

1948,Aug.23 – Scott# C51-C52 Was their currency re-valued? That's a big drop in the price of the stamps!

My guess is that there was a shortage of the lower values and so overprinted (surcharged) stocks of the high value stamps from 1947 that may otherwise have gone unused. Just a guess but it has happened this way all over the world many times. There may be other, more sinister reasons !
