One of my new pursuits in topical collecting is Johannes Gutenberg. About 40 years ago, I visited the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz. I still have the postcard I purchased in the gift shop, and I still have the souvenir leaf print they gave to each of us children.

I also purchased this block of 4, but they have long since vanished and I've not come across this set anywhere since.

The earliest Gutenberg stamp that I know of...... Before 1870 Germany consisted of several states, four kingdoms, six grand-duchies, five duchies, seven principalities, three free towns and one 'Reichsland'. Many of them issued their own stamps. In 1870 Germany was united and only Bavaria and Wurttemberg continued issuing their own stamps. GERMANY (Local Issues) Magdeburg - Mainz 1888 Gutenberg, inscription "Druckschriften Expedition Circulair Post zu Mainz" There were six stamps (all identical image) of various denominations. 1 p blue 3 p red 5 p brown 1 M brown 5 M silver 20 M gold I only have the 1 pfennig blue at the moment The 1 pfennig also appears pre-printed in green on a postcard GERMANY (Local Issues) Frankurt Am Main 1900 Inscription "Circularpost-Francofurtia Gedenkmarke 1400 Johann Gutenberg 1900" 1 M green 5 M brown 10 M grey 25 M brown 50 M brown 100 M gold I only have the 1 Mark in my collection at the moment

The following stamps are in chronological order and were generally all issued to mark a significant moment in Gutenberg's life. "In 1440 Johannes Gutenberg, came up with the idea of making individual type character out of metal and assembling them together to form words. Issued on 3 March 1940 for the Leipzig Spring Fair (German Realm)
This Gutenberg stamp was part of a four stamp series 'Leipzig spring fair 1940. Views of Leipzig' and all four are on this cover, which although not a First Day Cover as such was posted on the first day of issue.

The picture is of the bridge at Obod - where the first press in Yugoslavia was set up This second FDC also has a special cancellation for the Gutenberg Exhibition

Issued on 21 June 1948 (French occupation of Rhineland-Palatinate) I have been in touch with the Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation in Germany and they confirm 21 June 1948 for the 50 Pf. value, but only the month for the other two. 30 Pf. - February 1948 and 75 Pf - June 1947

These next two covers are semi-fake - the image has been laser printed at a later date onto an original blank First Day of Issue envelope. I did not realise until I had bought them and looked closely at the image. The next one is a strange one - Issued on 29 March 1952, six months before issue of the Gutenberg stamp for which the cachet was printed - 30 September 1952 The stamp used was from Charter and Three Stages of Rail Transportation Series: B .& O. Railroad issue to celebrate 125 years of rail transportation. This stamp was first issued on 28 February 1952.

Hi Stampsmurf: I believe covers with cachets applied after the posting cancellation are referred to as "add-on cachets." StampHinger

Thanks for sharing all those US FDCs, stampsmurf, they're great! Don stamphinger is correct about the last two - they're not fakes, just add-ons (although it is considered good form for the cachetmaker to note the fact that they're later add-ons somewhere on the cover, usually with a small note on the reverse side).

Issued on 20 January 1970. (East Germany) Gutenberg appeared in a series of six stamps titled 'Famous People'. This is a generic FDC, not specifically designed for this particular set of stamps.

I started my working life in 1974 as an apprentice compositor. In 1976 Great Britain issued the Caxton 500th Anniversary stamps. The head of the personnel department of the firm bought me the set as a keepsake and I bought a couple of First Day Covers myself. Family committments and a lack of disposable income kept me from 'stamping' for a number of years. When I finally started I started with the Caxton issue and then expanded. I will keep posting the Gutenberg issues here and then the Caxton in a different thread. It is not just print related stamps either.....coins, collectors cards, cigar bands and creamer lids are all in my collection too! Like many a collector on this forum I have family members who think I am a bit odd in my collecting preferences. I really loved my job as a printer - I have printing ink running in my veins!
