This issue marked the Resettlement of Tristan da Cunha in 1963 after the island had to be evacuated in 1961. The island is a shield volcano with the peak named St Mary's Peak which erupted causing the evacuation. The islanders were evacuated to the Royal Air Force base near Calshot in England. Formerly designated as part of The British Crown Colony of Saint Helena and Dependencies (including Ascension) and from 2009 renamed The British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.
The stamps have Stanley Gibbons numbers 55-67 and consist of St Helena stamps 176-188 0verprinted 'TRISTAN DA CUNHA /RESETTLEMENT 1963' in 3 lines. This is a first day cover from 12th April 1963.

What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

It covers more than just the eruption, evacuation and resettlement. The book is written by a sociologist who had made a study trip to Tristan da Cunha in 1938, met with the evacuated islanders while they were in England and returned to further his studies again after the resettlement. I happened to bump into the book in a used book store just by chance - a lucky find! Ryan

An interesting souvenir sheet produced for The Festival of Stamps, Central Hall, Westminster, London in May 1976. Ascension Island, St Helena and Tristan da Cunha each issued a set of 3 stamps to commemorate this event and, in addition, this sheet containing the 25p stamp from each territory.
