Budapest, Hungary on February the 22nd. Thanks for this nice post, Alan. It seems that we have not had very many postmarks on stamps of classic Hungary in this thread. I wanted to take a moment here to ask a question, especially of those who are much more knowledgeable in classic postmarks from eastern Europe than I am: is there any chance that this postmark might be from 3rd February 1922, rather than the 22nd of February? I am away from home on travel right now, so I do not have access to my stamps from Hungary, but in looking through those in the recent past, I had drawn the conclusion that most early Hungarian postmarks show the year first, similar to what Andrew ( butterfly ) discovered when figuring out how to read the dates on postmarks from classic Japan. So, @falshung , vasia , tomiseksj , Mick , what do you think? Is this more likely from 22nd Feb or 3rd Feb? Just interested in anyone else's observations.

...is there any chance that this postmark might be from 3rd February 1922, rather than the 22nd of February?... I believe that Chris ( Beryllium Guy ) is correct. Below is a Hungarian stamp with a more complete postmark that indicates the year it was cancelled at the front of the date string (in its case, April 23, 1926).

I would tend to agree with Chris and Steve about the dates on Hungarian postmarks. Here is a postmark from Orsova from 1906. So now we have dates (1906 and 1926) before and after the stamp in question. I also have clear postmarks with "916" (1916). We need to find a literature source or an expert.

Feb 27, 1986 from Hillegom, Netherlands... Were Roman numerals used to reflect the months in these type of Netherlands' postmarks or is the cancellation date November 27, 1986?

Feb 27, 1986 from Hillegom, Netherlands... Were Roman numerals used to reflect the months in these type of Netherlands' postmarks or is the cancellation date November 27, 1986? Steve ( tomiseksj ), I think Andrew ( butterfly ) has correctly identified the month as a Roman numeral, because if you look beyond the year (86) in the postmark, you can see a "1" with a serif on the top. If the month was supposed to be November, I think that those would have had serifs, too. Just my opinion....

I took a quick look at some of my Netherlands postmarks and noticed they all had roman numerals for the month, even on older ones, such as the one below. After being totally convinced, I then found this next one from November!!! (or is it really February? )

Once again, I think that the serifs on the "1" are the key to correctly reading the numbers. So, in your latest post, the top image clearly uses a Roman numeral for the month, and the bottom one, because of the serifs on the 1s, seems to me to be "11" for November. Once again, just my opinion, but I think you have it right.

Just to complete your thought, here is a "snip" of the Google map image you probably saw. I am guessing that there are multiple options for getting this, but I use the "Snipping Tool" on my laptop, which I think is part of the standard Microsoft suite of software on many computers.

Beryllium Guy Thanks for the info. Yes that is the map location I found. I use Fire Fox and finally found their beta version called screenshots which seemed to work OK.
