December 11th, 1987. And now for something more unusual, a Bénin tourism development tax stamp used on the bill for an excursion, and hand-stamped in Calavi.

I may be travelling, put I pre-scanned a few things for this thread this week. So here we have for December 10th, 1991, a postcard mailed from Yaoundé, Cameroon, to Montréal, Canada. Xavier, I just wanted to say "Bravo!" on your planning ahead to make Postmark Calendar posts during your travels. Well done to you! I also really liked the tax stamp and receipt from Bénin.... very cool piece!

But this was the extent of my preparedness. I will be back home on the 15th, and don't have any pieces for the remaining days.

Dec 12, 1956. Canal Zone, Scott #147 on Philatelic cover. Stamp commemorates 100th anniversary of completion of Panama Railroad (stamp issued Jan 28, 1955). Cover cachet commemorates reaching the milestone of one billion tons of cargo through the Panama Canal. Since it's nearing Christmas, here is a Christmas tradition in the Canal Zone that my dad told me about, and that still is observed, I believe. Christmas trees were shipped in for the holidays. After Christmas, communities would gather everyone's Christmas trees in a giant pile and set them ablaze on New Year's, creating an exciting and intense inferno. I carry on the tradition in our backyard, but with only one or two trees. Still, they burn pretty brightly against the snow.

30 kopecks Russian PSE used during the inflationary period after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in St Petersburg (the old Soviet postmark with the city name as Leningrad is used). Two octagonal "paid" meter handstamps of the St Petersburg post-office (for 970k and 500k) were used to supplement the PSE indicium and make up the 15 rubles rate valid from August 1993 to January 1994.

Well, back to December 13 (2011), and from a nice Sept Isles hand cancel to a crappy Staten Island spray cancel. But the Happy Holidays slogan with Santa and reindeer is quite nice.

13th December (1930) France, Scott #146, 50-centime vermilion definitive stamp, first "Sower" (La Semeuse) design, issued in 1926 and postmarked on this date in 1930 in Sanvignes-les-Mines, a community in the Burgundy region (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). I acquired this piece recently at the market in Aix, as it falls on what was my Dad's 4th birthday. So, another way for me to remember "Uncle Bill" on his day.

December 16Postmarked in San Diego, California on this date in 2014. The then-44 cent multicolored, self-adhesive forever stamp is one of four serpentine die cut 10.75x11 booklet stamps depicting Christmas ornaments that was printed by Banknote Corporation of America for Sennett Security Products and issued October 13, 2011 (Scott 4577). The location of the microprinted "USPS" enables differentiation from the similar stamp printed by Ashton Potter (USA) Ltd. (Scott 4573).

7 kopecks Soviet PSE used after the dissolution of the Soviet Union from Zelenodolsk, Tatarstan, Russia to St Petersburg. A violet handstamp "Paid excess sum" handstamp was used to make up the 80 kopecks domestic letter rate. The manuscript charge should have been "0,73" - a mistake? (5k PSE's were also current at the time)

1 krb Ukrainian PSE used from the village of Novoivanovka, Khorolskiy uezhd, Poltava to Kiev. By this time in the inflationary period the intercity letter rate had increased to 100 karbovanets, so a rectangular "PAID" (Oplachen) handstamp with a handwritten "99" was used to indicate payment of the necessary sum.
