Jan 4, 1974 Two Artcraft FDC airmail postal cards, both issued on this date. The first one, Sc#UXC14/UPSS#SA13b, is the 11 cent domestic rate card, postmarked State College, PA. The second one, Sc#UXC15/UPSS#SA14a, is the 18 cent international rate card, postmarked Miami, FL. The UPSS (United Postal Stationery Society) ID numbers include an a/b designation where a is the card on non-fluorescent paper, and b is the card on fluorescent paper. Both also have a phosphorescent tag bar to the left of the stamp which is easily visible with the naked eye. The catalog values for the a vs. b are similar, with a slight premium for the fluorescent paper (b) cards. For this issue, cards showing genuine postal use have a much higher CV than mint, unused, or FDC cards.

Jan 6, 1967 South Africa, pretty sure it's Sc#277 (not the nearly identical 265 or 341), cancelled Cape Town. The date is hard to make out, but I'm pretty sure it's 6th of Jan, 1967.

Jan 7 - two stamps from Belgium Jan 7, 1946
Sc#307, unknown city Jan 7, 1963
Sc#549, a stamp to recognize the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights, postmarked Warsage, a town in the general area between Liège and Maastricht. That general area is of interest to me as I've been researching my wife's great-great aunt, with the hope of writing a book about her. She was an American that was a nurse in the Belgian field hospitals during WWI. She married a Belgian after the war and moved to Liège. Her husband died a few months after the Nazis overran Belgium in WWII. She chose to stay, and despite being an American widow in her late 50's she became a member of the Belgian underground, helping escaped French labor conscripts get back to France, and downed Allied airmen get through Belgium on their way to Gibraltar via France and Spain. She was eventually arrested and imprisoned under very harsh conditions, but survived the war (unlike some of the less fortunate members of her group). It's been interesting doing the research. It's introduced me to some truly heroic stories of ordinary Belgian citizens during the occupation.

Canal Zone cover postmarked Ancon, CZ. On the reverse is a second postmark, 7 days later (Jan 16) at Salamanca, NY. The stamps on the cover are Scott#31, the Type I overprint on the Panama Balboa stamp. These stamps were delivered in quantity to the CZ postal service 5 times between Oct 1909 and Aug 1911. Based on details of the Canal Zone overprint, the two stamps on this cover are late printings. The picture below the cover is of the Ancon Post Office from a group of reprints of old Panama Canal Company photos someone made for my granddad. It looks like the top of a Model T is visible in the bottom left, so I'd guess the photo may be taken in the 1920's.
