Jan 10, 1949 (posting this a bit early because I won't be able to tomorrow) FDC of first US airmail postal card, Scott#UXC1a/UPSS SA1c, postmarked Washington, D.C. The United Postal Stationery Society lists three main varieties of this postal card: SA1 (light orange-red), SA1b (orange-red), and SA1c (deep red). The third one (SA1c) earns an elevated CV (vs. the other two). Sometimes the deep red is on all the printed areas, and sometimes it is red at the top and transitions to orange at the bottom. Most of the deep red variation ended up as FDC's and most of those seem to be Artcraft cards like the one shown below. Besides the FDC, I have two mint cards. I've added an image showing the stamps of all three next to each other for comparison (all taken from a single scan of the 3 together). I'm not an expert on these, but I think the one in the upper left is SA1, the one on the upper right may be SA1b, and the one on the bottom (the FDC) is SA1c. It's a bit difficult to scan these and get true colors as the buff background seems to confuse some scanners. The scans below are close, but the deep red is slightly deeper in real life, and the two orange-red stamps are a bit more orangey.

7k Soviet PSE used in Belarus after the dissolution of the USSR, mailed from Rechytsa Gomel region to St Petersburg, Russia (backstamp of Leningrad of 18/1). The PSE had been initially uprated, first to 15k with the octagonal "Post USSR" handstamp, then to 1 ruble with the "Taxe Percue" rectangular handstamp. By January 1993, the galloping inflation required an additional 1 ruble Belarus stamp to cover the proper rate.

Jan 15, 1964 Sweden, Scott #285 (1939), postmarked Västra Frölunda (borough of Göteborg, Västra Götaland). Scott lists 1939 as the issue date, and didn't give a range. That seems rather early for a 1964 postmarked, but I couldn't find a later issue of this orange 1kr stamp. Since this ubiquitous design had a long life in other denominations, I'm guessing this was issued over a long time period as well.

16th January (1919) Australia, Sc 60, 1/2-penny emerald, King George V definitive stamp, postmarked on this date in Melbourne, Victoria -- 100 years ago today. Dave ( sherro), I haven't done much posting in this thread in awhile, but when I saw I had this one coming up in the sequence, I wanted to do it in your honour, since I know that you live in Victoria. Now, I need to get to work on your giveaway packet!

January 16th, 1937. Letter sent from St-Jean-de-Luz (Basses-Pyrénées, now Pyrénées-Atlantiques), France to Tamberg (?), Germany. Funnily enough, the country name is written as "Alemania", in Spanish. Standard practice, I was always taught, is to write the local address in the destination country's language, but the country name in the language of the expedition country. This one is neither.

Canal Zone cover, Scott#C37 (Issued Aug 15, 1964, and available on a cool FDC foldout map of the Canal Zone with all the stamps of that series, produced I think by the Panama Canal Company, which I'll try to post in the Canal Zone section later today), postmarked Howard Air Force Base, C.Z. The year on the postmark looks like 1985, but the 9 and 6 have nearly closed loops, making them look like 8's.

This beauty was posted at Echternach on January 21, 1868. It was first issued on September 29, 1859, and is a rather late usage for this stamp. It does look imperforate to me, hopefully not the rouletted version trimmed! With the very straight right & bottom of the stamp, it would appear to me to be the lower right corner of the sheet. According to Michel, 310,500 were printed. Michel: 7 / SG: 11 / Scott: 8
