Jan 24 1965
54 years ago on this day, Sir Winston Churchill passed away. The memorial cover shown below was posted on that same day. I'm not sure what the people making these prepared-in-advance items would have done had he passed way near the end of the day after post offices had closed. Postmarked London, and bearing Scott#402 (issued April 23, 1964).

Jan 26, 1962 Italy, Scott#816 (issued Mar 6 1961) depicting the prophet Joel from the paintings of Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. My guess is that it's postmarked Brescia, and the FERR. stands for ferrovia which may indicate it's a railway station postmark or has some other railway connection.

Jan 27, 1975 USA, stamp is Scott#1546. Philatelic cover for the 1974-75 Operation Deep Freeze, postmarked 17038 (McMurdo Station, Antarctica). On the 29th, I'll be posting a companion to this with a different cachet that was postmarked two days later. This New York Times column details how these were obtained at the time.

Here is one from 27 January 1885 postmarked in Bradford, Yorkshire and sent to Warsaw, then part of Russia. It also has postmarks from Queensbury, northwest London on the same day, and in London itself on 28 January. On the back is an arrival stamp on 18 February (I think) 1885.

January 29th, 2013. Postcard mailed from Portugal to France. Nice one, Xavier! For those who don't realize it, Xavier is on business travel in California this week, and he prepared some scans ahead of time so that he could still post on this thread during his travel. Well done, my friend! Three pairs of sunglasses for you....

Going through the stockbook of German stamps I recently received yesterday, I didn't note many cancels in January. Then this one appeared... The centenary of the birth of Oskar von Miller, an electrical engineer, issued on May 7, 1955. Cancelled on this day at around 1700hrs in 1958 in Kaan Marienborn. Read about Herrn von Miller at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oskar_von_MillerScott #726
