4 February 2013 from somewhere in South Africa. Slogan: "Get your own PO Box at your local post office today." Solid advice.

February 2. Deutsche Bundpost, Accident Prevention. Issued 1972
Am I perverse, or do others think this German stamp is funniest thing ever printed with perforations? The whole serie has some obscure details. See the last one and feel the pain....

Ah, there is even better! I don't know what to call it; humor, irony, sarcasm; all the qualities Germans are most famous for? Maybe someone had read too much Struwwelpeter. My wife (a German) thinks that's hilarious, but I just find it incomprehensible.

This triptych of stamps from East Germany celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Meteorological Observatory in Potsdam. The 10pf shows the sun, an actinometer and the observatory; 20pf shows an antenna and a cloud formation over Europe & the 25pf shows the weather influence on farming. Cancelled at Gotha, a small town SW of Leipzig. That is where those East German covers I gave-away last year that stanley64 won were mailed from.
Scott #964a, strip of 3, issued January 24, 1968.

8th February (1970) United States, 10-cent air mail metered postage, printed on this date in 1970 in Charleston, West Virginia, 50 years ago today. Note on provenance: This sort of item is not one that I would normally have in my possession or collect for myself, but I am pretty sure that this is something that had belonged to my Dad, he who is known as Uncle Bill here on TSF. In truth, I am not sure if I even still have this item, as it may have gone to Mick or someone else in one of my earlier year-end giveaways. On top of that, it is the only item currently in my files for this date, and I really wanted to post something today.

9th February (1923) Egypt, Sc 82, 5-millieme pink definitive stamp, picturing the Great Sphinx and overprinted to mark the start of the Independent Kingdom, and postmarked on this date in Cairo in 1923. Nice stamp, isn't it? I really like this one.

The first of a number of Machin's with pretty good cancels. Amazing how some single stamps get such a nice cancel, but multiples do not.
From the longest running (it is, isn't it?) definitive series ever, the 30p mailed from Brixton Hills. Stoneham: probably EE30? I really have no idea, and I do not have Scott or SG catalogues.
I'm not sure if I really want to delve into this series now. Very complicated with all kinds of varieties. I'll take a stab at it and see with what I have so far.
And I just noticed, the two entries today that I posted today were mailed on the same day, same year! What a coincidence!

10th February (1921) Portugal, Sc 210 1-centavo chocolate, Ceres definitive stamp with imprint, postmarked on this date in 1921. I had a few choices for today, but I decided to go with this one in honor of Vince ( stanley64) and his great thread on the Ceres issue. Vince, if you see anything of interest on this particular stamp, I welcome your comments!

From a series issued on February 6, 1969, highlighting 19th century Berliners, this 10pf shows a newspaper vendor. Probably posted from Braunschweig, well west of Berlin in West Germany. Scott # 9N267

Vince, if you see anything of interest on this particular stamp, I welcome your comments! Other than being a nice dated copy from 1917-20 or the second issue and likely on smooth paper, not much more to add. An earlier date or having the stamp in-hand might reveal more...

Germany's 110¢ State Parliament issue for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that was issued on March 11, 1999. Scott #2030; Michel #2037
Aha, with the TSF image hosting service down, I had to use the imgbb "Add image to post" button to upload the image. That's how the images can be re-sized to a much larger image. The TSF host variant doesn't seem to allow for that. (Is imgbb the same as the other?)

February 14, 1973, Tempe. The cancel actually reads "U.S. Postal Service AZ 85281", the latter being the zip code for Tempe. This is the first time that I have seen this type of cancel - is that common? I can't quite make out the slogan. Is it "Save Your Week?" Interestingly enough, 14 February 1973 was a state and local holiday in Arizona. I suppose that the post office, not being a state agency, must have stayed open. No doubt the post office staff were a bit miffed, but at least I got a nice looking cancel out of their labor. From the Arizona Republic, 14 February 1973, p12.

The machine dater dial is common style for the period.

15th February (1895) Belgium, postal stationery card fragment, similar to Sc 65, 10-centime red brown definitive stamp depicting King Leopold (Scott design A28), postmarked on this date in Brussels in 1895. I don't collect postal stationery, but have hung onto this item because of the very nice clear strike CDS cancel. Note on provenance: This piece was either part of a giveaway or an outright gift from bobby1948 a couple of years ago. Many thanks, Bobby! We are missing you around the Forum, big guy, and hope to see you back soon!
