On Catholic countries, arkangel Saint Gabriel is considered the patron of post and, thus, of Philately and stamps. The reason is that he was the one who anounced Virgin Mary, her coming pregnancy. For this reason, saint Gabriel's day (September 29th) was considered (perhaps still is) "The Day of the Stamp". In Barcelona, it was common on the 1970 decade to celebrate stamp exhibitions around this date. In 1976, there was one on Catalonia's Postal History, held at Barcelona's Virreina palace. The special pm shows a 1944 Barcelona city council stamp.

anglobob - your Pamplemousses postmark on the Mauritius would be a great addition to my Citrus collection as the word is French for grapefruit! You have sent me scouring the usual sites to see what I can find.

USA Wow, $31.50 to mail an order to me from the APS Stamp Store. I didn't pay anywhere near that amount! Just amazing! I can't find my USA Scott pages that I haven't scanned yet, so numbers will be left out. I can't imagine for a second buying a mint $23.75 stamp for my collection! That's just too pricey for me! The two high value stamps though are quite nice.

Here's one from Scottsdale, AZ from 1 October 1963
That day was a Tuesday. and if one didn't feel like cooking and Gunsmoke on CBS, then taking your family to dinner and Cinerama was an option. How the West Was Won was playing at the Scottsdale Cinerama that eveniing, and I do like James Stewart. On the other hand, I'm also a massive Gunsmoke fan, so I think given the choice I would leave the movies to later in the week. Arizona Republic, 1 October 1963, p27.

Here is a nice meter cancel from Santa Monica for 3 October 1957, including the slogan "see the 3 new telephone colors". I wasn't able to discover what those three new colors were that General Telephone Company started offering in 1957. I did discover, though, that in 1957 phones came in quite a variety of colors. I had always been under the impression that phones in the 50s were just black or beige.

Germany - the first in the "Towns" series for Rothenburg on the Tauber River. It was issued on Thursday September 4, 1969. It was mailed on a Sunday? I thought that the businesses and people in general never did work on a Sunday. That must have come into effect some time after 1969. When I lived there, locals frowned up on Canadians doing business or even yard work on a Sunday. It was verboten for them to do anything but Church on a Sunday! Scott 1010 : Michel 603
Another series favourite of mine

Barcelona, October 7th, 1977: Espamer'77. Stamp Exhibition of Spain and Americas. Held on the Drassanes Reials (Barcelona's Old shipyard). It was my first proper stamp exhibition, as attendant.
First day pm. On the cachet of the cover, the postmark and the cinderella/tab of the satmp, you can see "La dama del paraigua" (The lady of the umbrella) a very popular XIX century statue on Barcelona's Citadel Park, showing a lady of that time. We even know the name of the lady: she was Josefina Arquimbau, not actually from Barcelona, but from Reus (100 km SW), a relative of the sculptor.
