brightonpete It took me a while--a year of mindless glancing--to appreciate what you are doing here. Unless you squeeze in a CTO, your German cancels are irregular, not tied as required by usual practice/regulations, right? I don't know when the old Deutsche Reichspost began requiring tied cancelations. The practice is the bane of my well-centered taste. So suddenly I get it; your collection is a vast trove of mistakes and irregularities. This makes a cancellation that normally would be very fine look much perkier.

I dunno, I am not that versed in the intricacies of the postmark. I just know it is used and leave it at that. Very superficial as far as details go! If it has a dated cancel on it, it goes in here...

I would think that all of the not-centered postmarks are that way because they had previously been tied to their covers. This example postmarked in Cambridge on this date ( May 11) in 1972 is an example. Can anyone tell me what the "D.I." represents?

tomiseksj thank you, and to make certain I understand, it basically means the cancellation is on both the stamp and the cover (aren't almost all cancellations on both?) Stan

Hey Stan. I'm not expert on this, but certainly Switzerland and I think Germany too normally require cancelations connect the stamp and some of the envelope. They started this practice in the 1870s, primarily to irritate me. Germany later relaxed this for CtOs, and blocks often are perfectly centered—proof they can do it—but tying remains normal for non-philatelic singles. Consequently, even partially centered cancelations are about as good as they get. Really well-centered cancels—what I fork out for—are flukish, maybe the result of lucky machine strikes.

Nice pre-stamp cover from 19 May 1838 from Le Locle, Switzerland, to Geneva. Le Locle is famous for watch making, but this is a personal letter, apparently between the wives of watch businessmen. Difficult to figure with charges of 10, 8 and 6 sols. The charges have to be compounded. My guess is it was assessed 6 sols in Le Locle, increased to 8 in Bern by the private Fischer Post, and further increased to 10 sols due in Geneva.
