From the Swedes' endless series honoring Nobel Prize winners. This one for the novelist Halldór Kiljan Laxness. Good thing for me they issued the stamp. As in, who? The Wikipedia piece notes 'In the 21st century interest in Laxness in English-speaking countries has increased following the reissue of several of his novels'. That might be optimistic. The stamp shows what I guess to be a scene of Icelandic horse herding, maybe from his old horse farm?

very attractive kasvik - reminiscent of the French/French Colonies - mostly - with a use of pastel colours and tending toward naive art - very appealing.

It always is nice to start the day with a stamp, much better than rushing into real work.
I didn't know about Oskar Bergman. A quick search shows his stuff hangs in just about every Swedish museum. He wasn't actually this ethereal, the engraver just barely scratched the plate.

June 12, 1996 US Scott 2995 postmarked June 12, 1996 in New Orleans, LA. I wish folks opening envelopes would consider stamp collectors before just ripping open an envelope. This one just barely missed tearing the stamp.

Amherst, Massachusetts, ninety years ago this day. I was born in Springfield, the largest city in western Massachusetts (not that the competition is especially heated). I moved around a lot when I was a kid, up and down the Connecticut River Valley and a few places overseas, and eventually whenever anybody asked me where I was from, I said Amherst - partly because I was actually there for six years (a majority of which I spent attending the University of Massachusetts); partly because people have heard of it and nobody ever heard of, for instance, Chicopee; and mostly because I liked it. I really didn't like school, but I loved the town: a big messy campus (with really bad Brutalist architecture) with some 20,000 people intruding on a very rural town with some outstanding apple orchards. (UMass was originally an agricultural college, so the location used to make sense.) The center of town was a lovable mélange of bookstores, bars, record shops, bars, pizza places and grinder shops, a rather grubby and dispiriting independent grocery store, record stores, head shops, dingy movie theaters, newspaper stands, stationers, package stores, and bars: scintillating if somewhat shabby-chic. Once I was able to move back to southern New England, I drove up there now and then. But like everything else, it isn't the same. Much of the main drag has been improved with name-brand merchandisers and there are more and bigger cars (most of which work, apparently, which also is new) further straining Amherst's parking facilities. The only thing I found familiar was a burrito shop run by some preternaturally industrious Central Americans; the shop wasn't there when I lived there, but you had to wait in line and once you got your food you had to find a place to stand and eat it, so all that was refreshingly homey. Route 9 going to Northampton has big malls and boutiques. My favorite Italian restaurant was condemned. So Amherst - my Amherst - doesn't exist any more. But the post office is in the same place and the chances are very good that the stamped envelope excerpted above was postmarked about 600 feet (±200 meters) from the intersection of North Pleasant Street and Main Street (Route 9, which crosses the state from Boston - where it's Huntington Avenue - to the New York state line). I cannot find the information at the moment, but I'm fairly sure the post office was there in 1933. That location has been the center of town since there even was a town. Local dialect notes: Package store: you probably call it a "liquor store" or "spirit shop". Grinder: "sub" is probably the most common name. They're "hoagies" in Philadelphia, and "po' boys" in some places. They're "grinders" in most of Massachusetts and, as far as I've ever heard, no place else on earth.

If your Amherst has gone eggdog, I wonder what Emily Dickinson might have said, had she been around to experience even greater change - mind you she hardly left the house so perhaps was less than au faux with change - “I do not cross my father's ground for any house or town.” - she chortled, apparently. Sorry, still don't understand what it is that 'grinders', hoagies, po boys are responsible for selling:-)
