June 17, 1985 Not a stamped cover, Postage and Fees paid for by the Navy, postmarked June 17, 1985 in Houston, TX. This contains a recruitment letter from the Navy, congratulating me on completing college. It was a bit late, I had been out of college a few years by then, married and had 2 daughters.

June 17, 1960 Not really a First Day Cover of US Scott 1031A, cancelled June 17, 1960 in Sante Fe, NM with a First Day of Issue cancel. mberry - why do you say this is "Not really a First Day Cover"? Do you mean because it's not cacheted?

Medieval Stockholm on the city's official 700th anniversary in 1953, cancelled on its first day of issue. Cancelled in Gävle, two hours drive north, back then more like four hours drive, I'd guess.
Like the US Columbian Exhibition, Stockholm's 700th came a year late. The real (or legendary) anniversary was 1952, but--if I it right--the Olympics in Helsinki that year seemed to suck up the region's foreign attention, so it had to be postponed.

swvl I consider a cover something that has been addressed, at the very least. This is just a blank envelope with the stamp (well, a plate block number of the stamp) and the First Day of Issue cancel. I am by no means an expert on the definitions of First Day Covers, just my opinion. I likely came into this from a collection I purchased at some point, do not recall. I have many FDCs that are not cacheted, I also have several that have not been addressed, will post another one tomorrow.

In FDC collecting, we would call this an uncacheted cover, but a cover nonetheless. As for the address, most if not all FDC collectors tend to prefer unaddressed covers for anything after 1940 or so. (Myself, I don't mind addresses.)

Thanks for that info swvl! I would not call myself an FDC collector but I have acquired a couple FDC albums and I do hang on to the ones I get. For example: June 18, 1960 FDC of US Scott UXC3 postmarked June 18, 1960 in Minneapolis, MN.

I haven't visited Gysinge recently. So tiny, population about 90 before the 2015 migration wave triggered a bunch of ups and downs. I imagine it's down again. Beautiful on the river, but a body can watch only so much water tumbling downstream. And there is no work, especially if you don't have a car.
This higher value stamp--back when a letter was 10 öre--might have been on a registered letter.

Elvas, Portugal, 120 years ago today. Hey, that's really old! This stamp's gotta be worth a lot of money, hah? I don't have that many postmarks from Portugal, and I'm sure all the rest of them are from coastal locations or just a few miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Elvas is the exact opposite; it's about as far from the coast as you can get, as unless there's a village in between that isn't showing up on the maps, the next town over is Badajoz, Spain. Elvas was a fortress town, one of the places where the Portuguese took a stand against Spanish incursion when necessary. So if you're into ancient armaments, it looks like this is a place you need to check out. Two touristy Web sites can give you a peep. Apparently most visitors to Portugal stay near the coast, and these sites give the impression that they're kind of lonely out where they are. June 20, 1963 FDC of US Scott 1232 postmarked June 20, 1963 in Wheeling, WV. That stamp is the first FDC I ever sent away for! Unfortunately, I scavenged an envelope from my parents' fairly modest office-supply stash to prepare it, and it was made out of really bad paper, so it turned yellow and ragged pretty quickly and I don't have it any more. I always liked that stamp; I don't know why, because objectively there's nothing especially unique about it, but it works for me. A lot of American state-anniversary stamps over the years have been pretty boring, and this one isn't. And getting even a bad FDC is better than getting an already-obsolete postcard from the Pampered Chef, whoever that guy is; that's either incompetent or insulting.

Hope I'm in the right place with this ............. The MV Empire Windrush arrived at the Port of Tilbury (London, U.K.), on 21 June 1948 and its passengers disembarked a day later. The ship carried 492 Caribbean migrants, many of them veterans of the Second World War, but it appears that it's only in the last few years that the circumstances surrounding this event have received the publicity denied them in previous decades. In fact this occasion is observed on the 22nd of June, rather than the arrival date. P.S. In fact 2023 is the 75th Anniversary of their arrival.

A pretty Geneva to start the day.
And a double commemorative: cancel and stamp for events in Gävle. The cancel from the Jubilee Exhibition commemorating the five-hundredth anniversary of the city's charter, from 1446, a bright spot from the bad old days of Danish rule. On a very cute stamp marking the one-hundredth anniversary of Sweden's annual Agriculture Fair. The latter seems often to have been scheduled to coincide with industrial fairs like the Gävle event. But they really lucked out philatelically that year.
And I'll listen more to Linda doing Bach. That's wonderful!

Sefwi Bekwai, Ghana, 23 years ago today. Sefwi Bekwai rates a one-sentence entry in Wikipedia. Trip Advisor has found three hotels there, but I didn't take the time to look up where those hotels really are; that part of Ghana (near the western border, about 100 or 120 km north of the Atlantic coast) is relatively sparsely populated. Sefwi Bekwai hosts a diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana. The name "Sefwi" refers to a small tribal nation and their language, which is a dialect of Akan, which is related to a couple of languages - Twi and Fante - that I've even heard of; a few other Sefwi Something towns can be found throughout that area. I did find a video on YouTube called Market Day in Sefwi Bekwai. I started watching it, and thought, "Hmm, this place is bigger than I thought it would be." Then I thought, "These houses are really crowded together, but other than that they look pretty nice." Then the view (it was aerial) got a little closer, and I saw those "houses" were hundreds of market stalls! Many hundreds, I would even say. It was extremely cool, and you can check it out here if you'd like.
