June 18th, 1904- Annapolis, Md. Miss Bessie Henderson was one of John Henderson's daughters.
"John Steele Henderson (1846-1916) was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly, United States congressman, lawyer, and a founder of rural free delivery of the mail, was born 6 January 1846 in Salisbury, N.C., the son of Archibald II and Mary Ferrand Henderson, a descendant of General John Steele, comptroller of the United States Treasury. In October 1874, Henderson married Elizabeth Brownrigg Cain (1850-1929)." The transit back-stamp markings are very interesting and I thought you might like seeing them:
This rather unique "TRANSIT" machine Cancel is of an American Service Marking AMS-43. It is dated both June 16th and June 18th, 1904. This marking is normally found on the reverse of covers which passed through the Washington D.C. Post Office for handling in transit to another office or railroad connection.

An advertising cover for Seal Soap which was made by the Globe Chemical Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The stamp is the 2c carmine, perf. 12 Washington from the 1890 issue; it is the cap on left "2" variety (Scott 220a). The cancel is from an early International small dial machine.

June 21This stampless folded letter had its 32mm red "CHARLSTON S.C./5 (with line over "5")" CDS applied on this date in 1848. The CDS was in use from 1847-1851. This SFL was sent on this date in 1851. It bears a 30mm blue "WILMINGTON/N.C." CDS with blue "10" rate stamp. The CDS, with 3mm high letters, was in use from 1841 to 1858. On June 30, 1851, the rate structure changed from the under/over 300 miles zone rate for 1/2 ounce letters (5 cents/10 cents) to a single letter rate per 1/2 ounce not exceeding 3,000 miles if prepaid (3 cents)/if not prepaid (5 cents).

June 22nd Scrambling Tobacco dealers, Dayton, Ohio ~ 1929 That's an interesting cancel - it was struck twice because of an error in the date slugs the first time around. One cancellation reads "11 22 / JUN AM", then it was corrected and sent through again, reading "JUN 22 / 11 AM". Ryan

Cover (Brender correspondence) from Elisavetgrad, Khersonskaya to Berlin through Moscow (machine cancel of 27/6). The cover is franked with a single copy of the 250R second-issue definitive, presumably provisionally revalued at this time in Elisavetgrad to 200.000 rubles to cover the foreign letter rate (only one other example of this unusual revaluation of the 250R stamp has been recorded).
On the front a violet “P” in circle, a handstamped “T” and in blue crayon a “800” postage-due notation. The postage-due appears to be raised due to the non-recognition of the local revaluation and not due to the lapse of the old rate since 17/6.
Vasia, could you please advise the use of the Violet "P" in circle? Thanks.

Vasia, could you please advise the use of the Violet "P" in circle? Thanks. Rod, this is not a Russian mark, but most probably a German one. I have it on other postage-due covers of the period to Germany and my guess was always that the "P" stood for "Porto". Maybe someone else has a better answer.
