December 18th, 1917
Cover (mourning, but for what reason?) from МУРОВАНЫЕ-КУРИЛОВЦЫ, Podolia (present-day Vinnitsa) to Sudak, Crimea (7/1/1918) through Kiev and Kerch (4/1/1918). The letter is sent by a member of the “GROUPE AUTOMOBILE CHIRURGICAL(E) FRANCAIS EN RUSSIE” (or “Ambulance Automobile Chirurgicale Dr Lacombe No 23”, as per the return address). The cover bears a circular violet seal of the unit on back and front. As per historical references, a portion of this unit, headed by Aime Mouchet, was stationed in that location since the end of October and left for Odessa (together with the rest of the unit) on Jan.1st. The letter is franked correctly at 15k. Censored in Kiev by censor #8.
The sender of the letter (Fourny, an “automobiliste” for the unit) is forwarding to a French person in Sudak the letter of his wife (? see contents).

December the 18th in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland and Tenterden, Kent, England. And Orange, New South Wales, Australia. I already had "Orange" in my "Menu of postmarks" however, I just noticed "Noon" as the slug time..... I don't recall seeing that very often, if at all.

A postcard sent to my Finnish grandfather by a `friend`. Postmarked Bergen, Norway on December the 20th 1916. Receiving mark dated January 9 1917. Not too bad for travel time during the Great War, 20 days. My Norwegian mother saved this card because this is the ship that she came over from Norway on in 1929.

One never forgets the ship you emigrate on, It's a moving event. A new land, a new life. I still recall our ship's smell, the games, the food, eating at the Captain's table. I learnt to swim in the ship's pool.
