December 12
In celebration of Jeff's birthday, here is a cover from the Keystone State, postmarked in New Castle, Pennsylvania. The stamp is a 3c green, perf. 12 Washington of the 1879 issue (Scott 184). This 3c pink Washington stamped envelope of the 1864-65 issue (Scott U58) was postmarked in Mineral Point, Wisconsin in 1868. Next is a 1c blue green, perf. 12 Franklin issued in February 1903 (Scott 300) on a Spooners Delight post card sent from Metcalf, Illinois on this date in 1908. And closing on a festive note is this cover from Santa Claus, Indiana in 1957. The stamp [in this instance] depicting molten steel defying gravity is the 3c bright ultramarine Steel Industry issue of May 22, 1957 (Scott 1090). Santa Claus, IN and many other towns with "seasonal" names are issuing special postmarks for the holiday -- ordering information is available here.

Thanks Zuzu, that reference helps reduce the timeframe during which the cover was mailed. Here is an article that describes some of Lieutenant Colonel McCreary's misfortune during the Civil War.

Wow! fabulous cover Steve, I'll be snitching that scan for my records, the first registered cover I have seen sans the "R" that the US instigated after the North German Federation labels.

"Rod, I believe that requirement may only have applied to international registered mail."
I see, I'll have to do some research, there is very little out there regarding the history of Registration. Thanks.

I wonder what the "A" represents after Kilmarnock.
I had to Google, the name sounded so familiar, I was wondering if I may have relatives there, I am sure I went there as a toddler.
Famous place, home of William Wallace ! and Johnny Walker Whiskey.

Dec 19th, 1938. Twain Harte, Ca.
It's been a while since I have had something to contribute to this thread. Here is a cover cacheted by John Coulthard of Modesto, Ca. It has an enclosure that I thought was interesting. To be honest, I had assumed Twain Harte was a DPO, but it still is there, in the Sierra Nevadas. Their chamber of commerce says it is "where the pines meet the sky".

December 19This 1837 stampless folded letter with 30mm red Hartford, Connecticut CDS and manuscript 18-3/4 was sent by David Burbank to Colonel James H. Johnson in Lisbon, New Hampshire. Its content was a business letter regarding lumber. Johnson would eventually become a New Hampshire representative in the 29th and 30th Congresses. This stamped envelope with 3c red Washington (Scott U9) was postmarked in Rockford, Illinois on this date in 1857.

I wonder if that is "London FS" = FS= "Foreign Service" If so, that's the latest I have seen that code on a stamp.
