May 19th. 1938, Wrights field Pennsylvania. In celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the advent of airmail, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Postmaster General James Farley established National Airmail Week for May 15-21, 1938 to celebrate and promote the fact the U.S. Postal Service moved mail reliably and with speed. Postmasters were directed to bring to the attention of the public "the wonderful network of air lines operating day and night throughout the country, and the speed and economy with which letters and parcels may be dispatched over immense distances.." Every citizen was encouraged to participate in the week's celebration by sending an airmail letter. In addition, each town was invited to create its own "cachet," a commemorative design to mark the event printed or stamped on the envelopes mailed that week. Today these envelopes are prized by collectors. Postmaster General James A. Farley During National Air Mail Week, 1938.The birth of the Eagle - Scott #C23
On May 14, 1938, the Post Office Department released a single blue and carmine airline stamp featuring an eagle which was taken from a sketch made by the President.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt's original design for the 1938 airmail postage stamp with the annotation: "red border, blue eagle, white background ... Franklin D. Roosevelt, fecit." The designer at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing reworked the eagle and wording but as indicated by FDR's hand-written "fecit," this was the one postage stamp design that the president felt he had created from scratch and for which he took credit as the designer.
The red and blue bicolor stamp featuring the American eagle helped distinguish airmail letters from regular mail. The first day of issue coincided with National Air Mail Week, a nationwide campaign to promote the use of airmail.

It`s May 21 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England and Gouda, Netherlands. Gouda, famous for its Cheese, not because it is made in, or near the city, but because it was traded there in the past.

May 24From Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1893. The 2c domestic letter rate for a 1 oz. letter to all parts of the U.S., in effect since July 1, 1885, was paid by two 1c deep blue, perf. 12 stamps (Scott 230) from the Columbian Exposition issue. You can read about the addressee, Dr. E. B. Rosa, here. This small cover, bearing a 2c red, type IV, perf. 12 stamp (Scott 279B) from the regular issue of 1897-1903, was postmarked in Tillamook, Oregon in 1900. The cover made the cross-country journey in 6 days, arriving in Haverhill, Massachusetts at 9am on May 30.

Tasty cheese comes from Tillamook, and maybe their speedy bus can deliver it to MA in 6 days. Or maybe it falls on its side at the first sharp corner. Ryan

May 25The 1c yellow green, perf. 10.5x11 Century of Progress stamps on this cover were issued on this date in 1933 (Scott 728). This stamp and its companion 3c violet stamp (Scott 729) were issued to commemorate both the Century of Progress International Exhibition which opened in Chicago on June 1, 1933 as well as the centenary of Chicago's incorporation as a city.

May 26th, 1925
Cover from Livny / Ливны, Orlov (interesting cds with two artistic x’s at bottom) to Falkenstein, Germany (3/6/1925), through Leipzig, 2/6/1925. Presumably a highly overweight letter (6x) franked at 1R 40k with 1R + 2x20k small heads. The non-standard (provisional) registration label is imperf, on white paper, with a black line at upper edge and a handwritten registration number. It is stuck over a domestic registration handstamp and it resembles the labels used on package postal forms, in both form and in the fact that it bears the placename in both Cyrillic and Latin. A circular Esperanto label on front.
