France (Algeria),27 April 1958 Cover sent from Oran to Paris Stamp : "Marianne de Muller" definitive (Michel #345) Slogan cancel : "the new Algeria will live being French" Breathtaking slogan cancel. Usually these are so mundane, something like 'Don't miss the Bugtussel Festival!' This one is as poignant as they come, shows everything in Algeria, even the French post, pulled deep into the civil war. And it shows a moment when the French outlook was improving, for a while.
Four years later; half-million dead, as many widows, and the sender probably was jostling with everybody else in the same situation; getting off a boat in Marseilles, dreading a whole new start. No cheery slogan cancel for that.
Monday morning over here. It shows.

April 30Postmarked on the shores of Lake Geneva in Lausanne, Switzerland on this date in 1952. The 20 centimes, brown carmine, perf. 12 x 11½ stamp depicting the Grimsel Resevoir was issued August 1, 1949 (Scott 332). This stamp had two types, differnetiated by the number of lines above the curved rock (3-Type I or 2-Type II).

Happy First of May. A decently centered Lidingö Villastad on a Swedish 8 öre F53 Oscar II. Well, legible enough. Curious stamp, not many uses--registered mostly--hard to find like this. Then suddenly the market flooded last autumn.
