June 18, 1959 ... FDC from Ottawa to Toronto. Stamp: QEII - Royal Visit Engraved: Yves Baril 5c - Dark Carmine Unitrade 386 Cachet: A Rose Craft 'Royal Visit' cachet by Joseph Rosenbaum a stamp dealer from Montreal. He had been producing FDCs for decades and branded them Rose Craft in 1957. Neither the cachet nor the Unitrade entry is 'on message' ... at least according to the Diefenbaker government in 1959. The government and the palace prefered the term 'Royal Tour' rather than visit. They wanted to make the point that the Queen was the head of state for Canada and not a foreign visitor. The Prime Minister also insisted that he or another Canadian Minister always be present, especially for the part of the tour in the US, to signal to the Americans that she had come to call as the Queen of Canada. Her reception for President Eisenhower, for example, was held in the Canadian, not the British, embassy in Washington. History is fun.

Hugh , QEII Royal Visit (Tour) red stamp is attractive but her look kinda scares me. Interesting (smile) ... maybe it's the red? Maybe you're remebering a scene in Game of Thrones? The 1959 Canadian stamp was based on a painting by Pietro Annigoni from 1955 ... actually one of a series of paintings he made of her for the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers (No, I'm not kidding). It is still displayed at the Fishmongers' Hall near London Bridge. According to Professor Wkipedia, it was done in tempura, oil and ink and in it she is wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter in a pastoral landscape. I imagine the last thing the artist would have wanted to do is scare people. So, it's probably the red (smile, again) ... here's what it looks like when it's not red. You might find this Wikipedia entry about this painting of some interest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pietro_Annigoni%27s_portraits_of_Elizabeth_IICheers,

Hugh, Thanks for providing this Wiki article. It reconfirms my opinion that Queen Elizabeth's eyes appear to be detached from the present or there is foreboding in them. Additionally, the robe looks like it's wearing her and not the other way around. The 1969 portrait is even scarier. People can say that Pietro Annigoni's work captured Elizabeth's role as the monarch. I just happen to disagree. Of course, it's all subjective.

here is SG 371 - the 10 pf. scarlet issued in March 1924, and cancelled this date in Charlottenburg, a locality near Berlin and named, apparently, after Sophia Charlotte of Hanover, Queen consort of Prussia. Note: Not to be confused with Charlottenberg, Sweden, or Charlottenberg, Germany.:-) ................ and what else happened in 1924 .............. amongst many events, one was that the free port of Fiume was formally annexed by Mussolini’s Italian fascist regime.

June 20, 1907 ... A duplex cancellation from Amherstburg, Ontario during the golden age of postcards. Mailed to Detroit, MI -- about twenty miles away and across the border. Stamp: Canada - Edward VII 1c Green Issued on July 1, 1903 Unitrade 89 Driven by the global craze for poscards, almost 1.5 billion of these stamps were produced in the five years between 1903-08. Picture Postcard: Old Fort Malden, Amherstburg ONDuring the French Revolutionary Wars, the US and the UK negotiated the Jay Treaty. Designed by Alexander Hamilton (Yes, the guy in the musical) it settled a number of issues reamining since the end of the American Revolution. One result was that British Troops at Fort Detroit were required to move acrros the Detroit River. They took up a new fortified position at Amherstburg. Fort Amhersburg was the official name but it soon became known as Fort Malden after the local towship. The Fort played an important role in the War of 1812 and, after a period of decay, during the Upper Canada Rebellion (1837-8). Since then, not so much. At the time of this postcard, the fort was in ruins and the land around it was in private hands. Today it's a national historic site in Canada.

June 21, 1949 … A First Day Cover commemorating the bi-centennial of Halifax, Nova Scotia Cancel: REGINA SASK [Saskatchewan] AM JUNE 21 49 This is not a slogan ‘FIRST DAY / OF ISSUE’ cancelation. Halifax was the designated first day of issue city. Although there are FDCs from more than 30 other cities. Stamp: Canada – Halifax Bicentenary Engraver: Silas Robert Allen based on a painting by Charles William Jefferys Issued: June 21, 1949 4c Purple Unitrade 283 The original painting can be seen here: www.cwjefferys.caCachet: Philatelic Supply Company FDC Nr. 283.501 In 1949, the Canadian Post Office charged a fee of 5c for servicing an FDC. 46,444 official FDCs for the Halifax stamp were processed. the political changes endured by 'South Africa' since the mid C19 through to the current 'Republic' are well known - here is one item from the original set of Natal postage dues that first saw the light of day when the area was a colony - I have the set which goes from 1/2d. to 1/- . After the defeat of the Boers in the Anglo-Boer - or S.A. war - 1899/1902 - the Union of S.A. was born out of the South Africa Act of 1909, and in 1910 the Union began life, replacing the Colonies of Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Orange River ............ the Union lasted until 1961 when S.A. became a Republic. The point of all this waffle is to point out the rather obvious, which is that despite this set of postage dues having been first printed in 1907, some of them have cancellation dates later than the creation of the Union (1910), so they must have been printed in prodigious quantities - some of my examples are dated 1913 - and seems they were used for some considerable time after the creation of the Union. This example was used on this date in 1912. This 5d. value is the only one with what appears to be a well known error - some were printed using a lower case P (inverted) to indicate the d. value - the give away appears to be the serif on the stalk of the letter.

You know what would be cool? A postcard from Cairo, Egypt but postmarked Cairo, Illinois. Well, anyway, here is one postmarked Carol Stream, Illinois (from 21 June 2023). Not quite as cool. us.carol.stream.il-2023.06.21-us.9477171 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr

A stamp design that's been the subject of vast amounts of scrutiny and looks to consume nearly two pages of SG catalogue space - colours are varied and die Nos. prolific - I won't even attempt to suggest the colour of the example here. Take your pick from a variety of SG catalogue Nos. - 197 onwards. This example was cancelled this date in 1917, though the stamp design was originally released in September 1913. Known popularly by collectors as one of the 'Admirals' - the others emanating from Canada and N.Z. - they all portray George V in the full-dress uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet.
