good moaning all, fingers crossed the pc is now working o.k. This bright violet 20 c. value - SG 335 - cancelled this date in 1921 shows the bust of Alphonso XIII - King of Spain - apparently this particular value/colour was issued in 1921. Has an unused value of £49 - needless to say the used value is nearer £0.20! As a definitive, it seems this design had a fairly long life - 1909 - 22, and picture attached showing the control No., on the reverse - appears these lasted from 1900 to 1932, I think.

having been absent for a few days I shall take the liberty of adding a second item in the Postmark Calendar - of course if this is a 'liberty too far' feel free to delete:-) So - here is the Portuguese 15c. 'brown red' SG 886 from this date in 1939, the design of which is known as 'Prince Henry the Navigator'. I've borrowed from Wiki for this guy, who say ............... ""Dom Henrique of Portugal, Duke of Viseu (4 March 1394 – 13 November 1460), better known as Prince Henry the Navigator (Portuguese: Infante Dom Henrique, o Navegador), was a central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire and in the 15th-century European maritime discoveries and maritime expansion. Through his administrative direction, he is regarded as the main initiator of what would be known as the Age of Discovery. Henry was the fourth child of King John I of Portugal, who founded the House of Aviz."" Apparently the term Dom is a title with a clerical implication. Seems this stamp is known both with and without the accent over the 'e' in PORTUGUESA - as can be seen, this example has the accent, and is worth less than examples without.

June 13, 1897 ... a picture postcard from Devant-les-Ponts, about 2.5Km outside of Metz (the commune would be incorporated into the city in 1908), to Melle in Lower Saxony. The arrival postmark is dated June 14. It's the common 'Gruss aus ...' format with drawings of five things to see in Metz. The address is written in a beautiful cursive hand using Kurrent - a handwriting style used on the continent. Best of all, the message on the front is done as cross-writing. The precision of the cross-writing and the care taken with this old script is evocative of a Europe (or a writer) who had the time to take their time completing this task. No fast, dashing scrawl here. Card: Gruss aus Metz Publisher: © Krnstverlag Lautz of Darmstadt (Hesse, Germany) Stamp: German: October 1, 1889 Value and Crown in Pearl Oval 5pf Green Michel Nr 46

this is the green 5 ore value from Sweden - SG 69 - King Gustaf V, and originally issued in May 1911 - this example appears to show 1916, and it seems this series ran from 1910 to 1919. The city of Eskilstuna apparently has a mixed Swedish/Finnish population.

June 14, 1929 ... Cover from and to St. John's, Newfoundland ... now part of Canada, then an independent British colony. Envelope: Bowring Brothers (logo on back): A shipping and retail company set up in Newfoundland in 1811. Sadly, they went out of business in 2019. Slogan Cancel: St. Johns, N'FLD, June 14 6:30PM 1929 - Commemorating First TransAtlantic Air-Mail June 14th 1919 Stamp: Steamship "Caribou" Engraved, 2c Deep Carmine Issued: January 3, 1928 Comb Perf: 13.5 x 12.75 Based on the perf it's Unitrade 146 (Versus Unitrade 164) [Any NFLD specialists please feel free to correct me, I find NFLD stamps sometimes hard to catalogue - you have my respect] As the Canadian Encyclopedia puts it "The SS Caribou was a passenger and train ferry that operated in the Cabot Strait between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. On 14 October 1942, the German submarine U-69 sank the vessel, causing the worst loss of life in Canadian waters during the Second World War." My parents, as children, lived in North Sydney at the time. And, over the years I took her namesake MV Caribou on the same trip to Newfoundland. A storied vessel of a very storied island. [Edit: Actually, my mother was living in North Sydney at the time, my father - having lied about his age - was serving in Europe]For more information, here's Professor Wkipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Caribou

15 June (1904) Here is a stamp from the Grand Duche de Luxembourg - showing the Grand Duke Adolfe - cancelled this date in 1904 - unfortunately, he died the following year. This item is SG 156, the 10c. carmine-rose from a series of defs. that were issued originally in May 1895 - Adolphe was Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 23 November 1890 to his death on 17 November 1905, and was the first grand duke from the House of Nassau-Weilburg.

17th June (1939) Wow - I'm first in, I think. Here is something which apparently was issued in France to commemorate the state visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, to France in 1938 - an en tent cordiale visit . This is SG 615 I think, and issued in blue to accord with the UPU regulations for the international letter rate, at that time. An attractive stamp showing the Arc de Triomphe and Palace of Westminster ??. Think you can just about make out the 17 - 6 - 39.
