June 30, 1939 … Two covers: One was posted in London and addressed to New York City. The other was posted in Baile Átha Cliath (Dublin) for Toronto. They were both sent via the Yankee Clipper making its first return flight following the inauguration of a transatlantic airmail service across the northern Atlantic by Pan American Airways. The UK cover would have travelled from London to Southampton to Foynes, Ireland to Botwood, Newfoundland to Shediac, New Brunswick and on to the US. The second, from Dublin to Foynes, to Botwood to Shediac and on to Toronto. The captain was Harold Gray and, including these two covers, this flight carried 12,569 pieces of mail. Passenger service would not begin until the following week. The story of the ‘Clippers’ is endlessly fascinating. The service wouldn’t last long. During WW2 the flying boats were commandeered for military use and after the war, new intercontinental land-based aircraft would end the need for the clippers. Stamps: United Kingdom 7d Emerald Green SG 471 8d Bright Carmine SG 472 Ireland / Eire Celtic Cross 3p Ultra Sc. 70 Sword 1sh Light Blue Sc. 76 Both covers have hand stamped cachets and a July 1 Botwood transit stamp on the back. I’ve attached information that PanAm provided to stamp collectors at the time.

I don't really go for postmarks without context, but unfortunately that is what I have here. Marquam, Oregon for 30 June 1956. us.marquam.or-1956.06.30 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr

here is an example of the 10 c. yellow-orange - SG 47 - showing EAST AFRICA AND UGANDA PROTECTORATES, cancelled this date in 1919 - this is one from the definitives set for George V, issued 1912 to 21 - almost all of these similarly yellowish coloured stamps appear insipid - yellows simply never work well, and the real yellows are abysmal in terms of clarity.

This is the British Guiana 12 cents, SG 338, showing Q.E. II - the image being 'Felling Greenheart ', and issued with others 1954 to 1963 - this stamp was cancelled this date in 1962, and shortly after, in 1966, the country became independent from the U.K. - this is quite a nice son. Other little known facts about Guiana are that the town of Buxton is on the Guyanese coast, and Guiana is the only English speaking country in South America. Greenheart timber, very durable and resistant to some wood-boring crustaceans, has been preferred for marine construction and dock work in Europe since the 1770s apparently, and was a favourite for fishing rod construction for most of the C19 and early C20.

Here is George VI on a black and orange 20c. - SG 139 - Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika - the image is apparently 'Crowned Cranes'. Most of the designs were re-used George V images, although for George V there were, believe it or not, stamp denominations that went way beyond the usual £1 - in fact right up to a denomination of £100 !! - though for George VI values appear to have stopped at £1, and they lasted from 1938 to 1954 - he died in 1952. This stamp looks to have been cancelled at Nairobi this date in 1942. Tanganyika appears to have gained independence in 1961, and became a republic the following year. I have an idea that this group of K, U & T are known as KUT stamps - is that correct folks?

July 4, 1892 ... A 'Gruss aus' ... Bad Nauheim picture postcard from Bad Nauheim to Friedland, West Prussia (Westpreußen). Written in an interesting form of cross-writing to get more text on the limited space available for messages. By interesting I mean that instead of the text being written, at 90 degrees as is usual, the overlay was more like 45 degrees - in an attempt, I suppose, to make it a bit easier to read. Having said that, using the heavy Kurrent style of handwriting with thick strokes and trying to write small, it's still a huge challenge to read. Stamp: Imperial Germany Definitive - Crown with Pearl Oval 5Pf Green Issued: October 1, 1889 Michel Nr. 46

I like the Coats of Arms franoise - I seem to have a lot of them - are they still issued, or did they come to an end some time in the C20 do you know?

Happy 4 July to my fellow Americans. Here somebody was —inadvertently—commemorating the day 113 years ago, on the train between Gävle and Storvik (PLK 332).
At the time Gävle was a fair-sized town, but Storvik was just a rail junction town. A larger line passed through Storvik since 1858, the Gävle-Dala Järnväg (GDJ). The stamp seems to be for the final leg of that. Nowadays Gävle-Storvik is a pleasant half-hour drive.

Snap - I had a choice this morning of either this one or the George VI Tanganyika 20c., and I chose that latter. My Swedish stamp is a year or two later than yours - apparently, Landskrona is a town in Scania, Sweden, located on the shores of the Öresund, it occupies a natural port, which has lent the town at first military and subsequent commercial significance. Hope you don't object to my adding the same stamp:-) Of course if I actually looked at the stamp, and put brain in gear first - I would'nt have posted this ..................................... what I meant to say was ... I nearly posted this one the other day ............ My point, I think, was, what a great coincidence to have the same stamp on nearly the same day ........... or something like that . Ignore me.

Jacksonville, Florida for 5 July 2023, with a slogan cancel recommending that we protect endangered species, which seems like solid advice. us.jacksonville.fl-2023.07.05 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr Is that a raccoon? I see 'em all the time in the early morning around my apartment complex, as bold as anything. Look me straight in the eye, they do, as if daring me to make a move. They ain't endangered, the overfed, cocky blighters.

Good morning from Lidingö, on a high value first issued in 1981. Looks philatelic-perfect, from one of the small post offices, Bodal neighborhood. Face value was equal to USD 10 then, like 25 or 30 bucks today. Somebody really wanted it. Sadly, worth peanuts now.

I assume it's o.k. to submit Stamp Duty items, so here goes ...................... this is the young head on the 2.1/2d. Stamp Duty value - SG 315 - for Victoria (Oz state) in either brown-red/yellow or red-brown/lemon - take your pick - and cancelled this date in what I think was 1898 (not easy to be certain) - Melbourne, the coastal capital of Victoria. Very grateful if someone is able to say what the 4 Y designates - could be something like 4 p.m. for example. The letter Y isn't included in the British system of letter codes for the twelve hour clock - perhaps this one was a notation peculiar to Melbourne.
