24th July (1916) Waiting for my book, so not really au fait with this item of postal stationery, other than to say ........... George V in Admiral of the Fleet uniform and cancelled this date in 1916 - date wise, the appearance of 'Admirals' (at least for stamps), was apparently Canada first in 1911, then Rhodesia 1913 and lastly N.Z. in 1926. This one is a not very square 'cut square' - the cancellation possibly reads 'UMTALI - S. RHODESIA', which is the third largest town in what was Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe of course) - but correct me please if I'm wrong on that. The British South Africa Company originated with Cecil Rhodes from whom the area took its name.

July 24, 1916 ... The Battle of the Somme had started earlier in the month and a German soldier taking a break from the war, sent this postcard back home to Tungeln near the city of Oldenberg - then the Duchy of Oldenberg. Side A: Coloured images of the leaders of the four Central Powers. Clockwise from top right, Wilhelm II the Kaiser of The German Empire. Ferdinand I the Tsar of Bulgaria, Mehmed V, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Franz Joseph I the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Underneath are four soldiers of the four empires and the caption "We shall not be defeated as long as we are united". Side B:Receiving Cancel: Outer Ring - K.D.Feldpostexp. de 111.Inf.Div. [Field post office of the 111th Infantry Division] Inner - 42.7.16.11-12 V [The morning of July 24, 1916) Regimental Address Stamp [Return address] Company 9, Infantry Regiment 77, 111th Division The 111th Division of the Imperial Germany army is known to have been on the Somme during the battle. It had been formed of elements of the Prussian Army and the Imperial German Army in Belgium in 1915. More than three million men fought in the Battle of the Somme. More than one million of them were killed or wounded. It is one of the deadliest battles in all of human history and one of the great tragedies of humankind.

You can have my example for a lot less than £120 ;-) Have attached picture of a few more of my George V 'Admiral' low value stamps - these things seem to be fairly common - sorry the quality of the picture not v. g.

25th July (1938) The ornate cross - bottom left on the stamp - hides part of the descriptive wording/title of this value - in full it reads 'DAK TONGA', which translates as ............ 'A post system by means of transport relays of horses stationed at intervals along a route or network, carrying mail and passengers'. This is the 3 Anna value - SG 253 - in yellow-green, issued in December 1937, from what appears to be the first series of Indian stamps to show George VI - this one cancelled this date in 1938. The oval-shaped double ring cancellation is large, and in the upper part incudes what is almost certainly part of a LATE FEE wording, which indicated that payment of additional fees was required for mail put into the postal system after normal hours of business - 'in order to connect with evening despatches by mail trains'. My other eight copies of this value show a circular cancellation only, so it's possible that LATE FEE cancels were always oval in shape - whether the upper case F inside the ring is related to payment of the FEE I've no idea.

July 25, 1906 ... This postcard was sent from Düppel [Dybbøl] in German occupied Schleswig to Millard, Douglas Country, Nebraska. During the Dano-Prussian War of 1864, also known as the Second Schleswig War, Prussian and Austria invaded Jutland, Denmark. The Battle of Dybbøl was fought on the morning of April 18th. After six hours of artillery bombardment by 126 guns, 36,000 Prussian troops with breech-loading rifles 'stormed' 11,000 Danish troops with rifled muskets defending the fortifications at Dybbøl - about 6KM outside Sonderborg. Military analysts opined that one reason the battle, and eventually the war, was lost lost by Denmark was that too much effort had been spent fortifying the Danevirke ... ancient earthwork fortifications first built by in 650AD. It was not suited to sustained fire by modern artillery. After the war, the Danish provinces of Schlewig and Holstein were occupied by Prussia and eventually incorporated into the new, German Empire. Dybbøl became Düppel and Sonderborg became Sonderburg. The town became a significant attraction for German tourists until 1914. As is evidenced by this postcard. After the first World War, following a plebiscite ordered by the treaty of Versailles, North Schleswig was returned to Denmark - including the town of Dybbøl. Stamp:German Empire - Germania / 'Peace Print' 5Pf green [x2 for international post] Issued - October, 1905 MiNr 85 Receiving Cancel:Outer Ring - DÜPPEL (KR.SONDERBURG) Inner - 25.7.06.3-4 N Postcard:Published by Hamann, in Düppelhöh Illustration of German Officers examining the ruins of the fortifications after the battle. The caption reads, "Schanze [fieldworks] after the storm of April 18, 1864" The card, was sent to Christ[ian?] [Not sure], Millard, Douglas County, Nebraska, 'Amerika' ... Millard was a small town, with a post office between 1873 and 1967. It is now part of Omaha. Douglas County was the largest and one of the original nine counties of Nebraska.

26th July (1946) One of several Polish values from 1945 - 46 entitled 'Warsaw 1939 to 45', before and after destruction - I think they're all imperf. - this is the 6 Zt., which according to my 1967 SG catalogue was issued originally 1st January 1946 - SG 543 in slate, and showing the G.P.O. - regret I can't read the location of cancel, but appears to be this date in 1946. The catalogue doesn't say as much, but possibly a granite paper - very hairy.

apparently issued to commemorate the Birth Centenary of Dr. Juan Gregorio Pujol - lawyer and legislator in Argentina, and first issued June 1918 - Scott 247 - might be SG 449 but equally possibly not. 5c. grey and bistre - this example cancelled this date in 1918 - the plainness and clarity of the font used for the cancel are striking - sans serif.

27 July 1950 postmark (I think!) This series of three pairs of stamps (Scott #109-111) was issued 1 October 1949. The packet reached the recipient despite lack of a street address.

Pretty good Pforzheim from 90 years ago today. The Graf Zeppelin made a dozen flights that year, all to South America. If used for it's intended purpose, I think this stamp would have made the 4 August departure from Friedrichshafen. Tragic somebody took it off the envelope.

28th July (1924) The U.K. Wembley Exhibition of 1924 produced two stamps--this is the 1.1/2d. in brown - SG 431 cancelled this date exactly one hundred years ago today. Have also attached a picture of mint examples of this and the 1d. in scarlet (SG 430)--apparently those cancelled in 1925 are worth much more. CRICKLEWOOD is a north London suburb - apparently a town which mostly grew to fame in the Victorian and Edwardian periods. No idea quite why the then rural area of Wembley was chosen for the exhibition site - now demolished, like so much of our history - the entrance columns/architecture were very striking--the exhibition itself was apparently to celebrate Britain's status and achievements and our Empire connections around the world. P.S. So, perhaps a similar role to the 1851 Great Exhibition.

Netherlands 15 c. 'yellow' showing Queen Wilhelmina, and cancelled this date at Amsterdam in 1916 - regret I'm unable to run this down in my slightly older SG catalogue - to match the cancelation date - so if any kind soul can oblige I'd be very grateful. thanks.

28th July “….apparently those cancelled in 1925 are worth much more.” ….”apparently those cancelled in 1925 are worth much more.” Incorrect , the cancellation date is immaterial, unless it was a first day of issue. It is the reissue the following year with the 1925 imprint replacing the 1924 in the design that makes the value difference.

On this day 29 July 1948 the London Olympic Games opened, I have a FDC on my ebay site. Item no. 375558149982 As I am travelling I can’t post the image ☹️☹️ There is also a next day cover with the full set 29/7/1948 which would have done tomorrow for my birthday! That issue , given to me aged 7 , started my lifetime hobby. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/375558149982
