Netherlands 15 c. 'yellow' showing Queen Wilhelmina, and cancelled this date at Amsterdam in 1916 - regret I'm unable to run this down in my slightly older SG catalogue - to match the cancelation date - so if any kind soul can oblige I'd be very grateful. thanks. Whilst you got the date right paul1 - 29 July, the year is incorrect. as the '16', is a time marking. The Queen Wilhelmina, Type Veth stamps were issued from 1924-1940, so 1916 is not possible with this series. Rather, this stamp, the 15 cent Queen Wilhelmina Type 'Veth' as shown was released in 1929 and the year of cancellation would be found in the postmark in the bottom of the outer ring.
Let me have a look and see if I cannot find a full 'AMSTERDAM CENTRAL STATION' postmark in the collection to share...
Have fun and happy collecting!

August 1, 1947 ... And, what would become South Korea is under US military occupation (The Soviets are occupying the North) and this stamp was issued to commemorate the resumption of international mail services. A stamp had been issued in 1946 when mail service was established between Korea and the US. In 1947, however, the service became global and is illustrated on the stamp by a chain of letters circling the globe. The image was also used as a fancy cancel on a First Day Cover. Stamp:Korea - Letter Encricled Globe 10wn, light blue, granite paper Rough perferations 11x11.5, not considered a defect Issued - August 1, 1947 Sc. 77, Bush 25

August 4, 1938 and August 4, 1942 ... Two people on vacation but what a difference a few years makes. This first picture postcard was sent by an American tourist visiting Crystal Beach, Ontario. From Indiana, she marvelled at how it was "ten times" larger than her own local fair. Many thousands of tourists arrived daily on the steamer Canadiana from Buffalo, NY ... just across Lake Erie. Although on the Canadian side, Crystal Beach was billed as the 'Coney Island of Buffalo'. I grew up there. The population in the off-season (Labour Day to Victoria Day) was about 900 (in the 50's and early 60's) and more than 20,000 in the summer. For most of the year, it was like living in a ghost town made up of thousands of empty cottages. Few, if any, were 'winterized'. In 1938, when this card was sent, Crystal Beach was an idyic place to spend a day or all summer. The stamp features King George VI in a 'peacetime' suit. In this second postcard, mailed in 1942, the King is now dressed for war. Despite this, life went on. The card was sent by a woman named Eva also taking a vacation - this time in Quebec City. She is sending the card back to her colleagues in Ottawa - "Hello to the staff, enjoying my vacation greatly". The card is going to Room 148 in Number 2 Building on Lyon Street -- an unnamed department in an unnamed ministry ... almost certainly in a civil service job and probably in one of the numbered 'temporary' buildings put up in the capital during the war. On this date (August 5, 1899) 125 years ago this letter was mailed from Hamilton, Ontario to Springfield, Massachusetts. It features a nice flag cancel with a 'B' in the flag. It is franked with 2 Queen Victoria .01 Unitrade 75. This cover also has a rubber stamp for the Assistant Postmaster of Hamilton Canada on both the front and back. The cover is addressed to H.S. Hyde on the Agawam National Bank of Springfield, Mass.. Henry Stanley Hyde was the president of this bank along with several other businesses in the area. The cover came with the letter he had sent to the Hamilton Postmaster placing an order for Canadian stamps probably for his collection. The envelope was folded and appears to be addressed to him by him as a return addressed envelope for his order. He included .25 and his order totalled .23 with .02 left for the postage required. A bio of Henry Hyde. (Note: this bank ceased operations in 1905 so the bio predates that.)
