This ain't a postmark, not even close. But it appears on a postcard and is an interesting piece of ephemera from a time now past, so perhaps I can be forgiven. A meter reading date stamp from the North Wasco County P.U.D. for 5 August 1964. us.the.dalles.or-meter.reading.postcard.1964 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr

This Finnish FDC from 6 August 1949 is from my dad's philatelic materials (Cover #73 of the 229 so far inventoried). The Scott online catalog states the dark blue green 5m stamp on the cover (Sc. #285) and two others (#286 and 287, issued on separate dates) were issued to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of "Willmanstrand, Brahestad and Kristinestad..." But Wikipedia has a lengthy entry on the Finnish town of Lappeenranta, identified on the stamp. The entry mentions that an area near the town, in southern Finland, has been occupied for at least the last 2000 years.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. August 7, 1899 … A cover from The Calvin Company on Garden Island, ON to James Redden & Co. in Kingston ON. Garden Island in the St. Lawrence River was the home of a large shipbuilding and lumber forwarding company owned by Delino Dexter Calvin — he also owned the entire island — a storied entrepreneur of early Canada. In 1899, about 750 people lived on the island — his family and employees. The company town had stores and recreational facilities for the workers and, from 1868, its own post office. There was a regular ferry from the island to Kingston. Today, Garden Island is a ghost of what it was. The company is long gone, the ferry is no more and the post office closed in 1961. Today, his descendants still own the island and use it as a summer retreat. James Redden & Company were grocers in Kingston. Most likely the cover included the payment of a bill or an order, or both. Stamp: Canada - Queen Victoria: Maple Leaf series with Numerals 2c purple Sc. 55 Cancels: Receiving Cancel - GARDEN ISLAND ONAUG 7 / 99Arrival Cancel - KINGSTON CANADA3 / AUG 7 / 99Postmark - Sorting / Route 4 / AU 8 / A

Letter addressed to Eileen Rafferty in St George, Bermuda, postmarked at Boston Back Bay Annex on August 8, 1934, which arrived in Bermuda on Aust 10th (Sent aboard the Lady Nelson). Subsequently a label was applied over the original address that redirected the letter to its original sender (Mrs. Theodor Barry). This may have been redundant as there is a return address on the reverse of the cover. It appears that Mrs. Rafferty, or her agent, then applied a 21/2d stamp (SG81) to the cover, seemingly, while onboard the August 15th, 1934 sailing of the Monarch of Bermuda, as the cover is hand stamped with Furness Line’s “Ported on the High Seas” paquebot marking, and the cover is back stamped with a New York paquebot cancelation dated August 17, 1934. The Bermuda stamp was subsequently canceled at Southington, Conn, the same day. Note the ancillary marking “Miss sent to….”.

France,9 August 1960 Cover mailed from Saint-Malo ("the privateer city" and "congress city") to Paris, franked with "Marianne à la nef" definitive stamp (Michel # 1278) franoise … great cover. In Canada, children both anglophone and francophone still sing about St. Malo. It’s one of the first songs my daughter learned in French Immersion primary school. À Saint Malo beau port de mer, À Saint Malo beau port de mer, Trois beaux navires sont arrivés, Nous irons sur l'eau nous irons promener, Nous irons jouer dans l'île. Jaques Cartier, came from St. Malo … an iconic Canadian. Canada - Jaques Cartier 3c Blue Issued: July 1, 1934 Sc. 208
PS - Another candidate for ‘Most Beautiful Stamp’ … look at those facial impressions, all done with engraving. PPS - This is a stock image. I’m on the road this morning, just have BF in a dinner and far from the copy in my own collection (smile)

August 10, 1968 ... Just a mundane little chrome postcard sent by Ina Russell to Robert Q who hosted the Robert Q Travel show on CKSL an AM Radio Station in London, Ontario. Robert Q [Smith] encouraged his listeners to let him know about their travels ... whether they were off to Spain or just doing a Sunday Drive. He talked about their travels on his weekly broadcast. Ina, a resident of London, sent him a postcard and wrote, "Having a nice trip travelling". The postcard showed two photos of Crystal Beach and was posted from Welland, ON. At that time, CKSL broadcast as Funny1410 a 10,000 watt local radio station. At night it directed its signal north to not interfere with WDOE, a US station (1,000 watts during the day, 31 watts at night) using the same AM frequency and located just south, across Lake Erie, in Dunkirk, NY. Canada, eh? Stamp:Canada - Centennial Definitive Series Queen Elizabeth and a lock on the 'Seaway' 4c Carmine Rose Issued: February 8, 1967 Unitrade 457 4c was the postcard rate until October 31, 1968. Cancel: CDS with 7 wavy lines Outer Ring - WELLAND ONTARIOInner - 11:30 AM / AUG 10 / 1968Welland is a city that gave its name to the 43 KM Welland Canal joining Lake Ontario and Lake Eire (bypassing Niagara Falls and the Niagara Rapids). August 12, 1965 ... An FDC from Sussex, New Brunswick to Chatham, Ontario featuring the memorial stamp for Sir Winston Churchill. The former British PM passed away earlier in the year ... on January 24. Since I define mourning stamps as anything issued prior to the first anniversary of their death, this would be Canada's mourning stamp for Sir Winston. The image on the stamp is the well-known Roaring Lion photograph taken in 1941 by Canada's Yosuf Karsh when the former PM was in Ottawa. It was taken on Canada's Parliament Hill when he gave his 'Some Chicken, Some Neck' speech. Stamp:Canada - Sir Winston Churchill 5c Brown (First Canadian stamp printed with duo-tone lithography) Issued - August 12, 1965 Unitrade 440 Cancel: CDS Outer Ring - SUSSEX N.B.Inner - 13 / 12 VIII / 65
