The 10 öre red from the long-running Oscar II series is the second most common stamp in Sweden, issued in more than 1 billion copies. Postmark is a Type 14 from Tierp, a village approximately half-way between the cities of Uppsala and Gävle.

Bettws-y-Coed is a village in Wales. The obliterator shows the code F32, used from 1874. Stanley Gibbons value it at £12.
The triangular mark, with the point at the base, is a London (SE) Inspectors' mark, usually indicating mail missorted to the wrong stream.

August 16, 1910 ... A 'Patriotic' postcard featuring the Martello Tower at St. John, NB is posted to Rockland, MA. A 'Patriotic Postcard' is a type of postcard popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. In the case of Canada there was a wide-range of such cards that featured what were considered to be typical British or Canadian motifs and symbols - beavers, maple leaves, flags, coats of arms, Union Jack, bulldogs, etc. Often they would be arranged in a coloured frame inside of which was printed a Black and White photo or illustration. The is card was number 893 of what is known as the 'Crossed Flags and Canada Crest' series. According to the Canadian Patriotic Post Card Handbook by Gutzman (BNAPS, 1985) it is Type WBR B. There were 993 in the initial series -- which first appeared in April 1904. Stamp:Canada - Edward VII 1c Green Issued on July 1, 1903 Unitrade 89 Cancel: CDS with 7 wavy lines Outer Ring - ST. JOHN, N.B. / 1910Inner: AUG 16 / 1 - PMPostcard: Published for T. H. Hall, Colonial Bookstore, St. John, NB Printed by Warwick Bros & Rutter, Toronto, ON

August 17, 1911 ... A picture postcard from Port Saxon, NS to Brockline, MA. Althought the writer said that he would "write tonight if not too tired" he had more to say than would fit on the postcard. So, he turned it 90 degrees and continued writing -- a technique known as cross-writing. Clearly, he felt that what he had to say was important ... he added, "I know you will feel relieved now". Port Saxon is a small village in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. Its post office dates back to 1887. Stamp:Canada - Edward VII 1c Green Issued - July 1, 1903 Unitrade 89 Canacel: Broken Circle (Type A1) + Obliterator Split Ring - PORT-SAXON N.S.Inner - AU 17 / 11Postcard:Publisher: Valentine & Sons Printed in the UK Image: Regiopolus College, Kingston, ON (Opened in 1892 as a boy's catholic secondary school). Why a Kingston postcard was used in a small village 1,100 KM away is anyone's guess.

Best wishes to everybody. Saturday and I'm moving slow. Not slow enough; just got chided by a colleague for answering the work e-mail he sent on a Saturday.
Slow... Here is the type norsten showed yesterday, probably traveling through the same place. In my slow mood, I'd like to know the typical speed of the Uppsala-Tierp-Gävle railroad (Uppsala–Gävle Järnväg, UGJ) when this Oscar II was cancelled as it rolled and rattled along, 126 years ago today. Probably pretty respectable, even by today's standards, not a Swedish version of the slow train through Arkansas.

August 18, 1949 .... and, as the world rebuilds, two friends are playing chess by mail using a postal card send from Frankfurt in the US Occupation Zone in Germany to Cross City in Florida, USA. It looks like a new game has just started ... 1 42:44 - 37:36. They are using ICCF numerical notation which is considered an international system as there is no mention of piece names nor does it use specific alphabets. In algebraic notation I assume their first moves were 1 d2:d4 - c7:c6. It looks like Donald Dyal, the US player, has recorded the move he plans to make next ... 32:34 -- The Queens' Gambit. I wonder who won? Stamp: German - Bizone Occupation Stamp (British / American) Buildings Series / Brandenburg Gate 20Pf Issued - 1949 MiNr 85WA Cancel:Outer Ring - (18) FRANKFURT (MAIN) 2 [Can't quite make it out the rest, I assume it's (A[m] MAIN) / R] Thanks franoise Inside - 18.8.49.-21
Handstamp: Frankfurter / Messe / 1949 / 10-29 SEPTEMBER[Frankfurt's annual Trade Fair, dating back to a grant in 1240 from Emperor Frederick II]
Postal Stationary:The above card was used later in the occupation period. It was edited and reprinted from the very similar format used in Germany during the war. Here is an example, of how the earlier form was initially and quickly edited for use immediatly after the war.
