My apologies for posting this a day early, I'll be away from computers all weekend. What caught my eye on this cover were the cancellations. Nothing special about it but just seeing a cancellation on my British mail these days is quite a surprise as the majority of it is uncancelled. Rob

August 25, 1911 ... and a woman named Lillie send a picture postcard from Ridgeway, Ontario to her sister[?] Irene in Rochester, NY. The picture on the postcard is of the 'Backety-Back Senic Railway' in Crystal Beach. It was a wooden roller coaster that operated between 1908 and 1926. It was known for an innovation that had its riders travel backward for part of the ride. This feature was a predecessor of modern steel 'shuttle' roller coasters. The coaster had few safety features. According to Wikipedia, "the only restraints were the sides of the cars themselves". For more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backety-Back_Scenic_RailwayRidgeway, a small town just north of Cyrstal Beach, was founded by Loyalists who left the US after the revolution. It is the site of the 'Battle of Ridgeway'. This took place in 1866 when Irish-American Fenians invaded Upper Canada in an attempt to out the British and establish an Irish Republic. This was the largest of several Fenian border skirmishes. The battle accelerated support for Canadian Confederation which took place in 1867. Stamp:Canada - Edward VII 1c Green Issued on July 1, 1903 Unitrade 89 Cancel: CDS with separate Obliterator Outer - RIDGEWAY / ONT Inner: AUG 25 / 11 Postcard: 'Senic Backeyty-Back Railroad, Crystal Beach, Canada' No. M248l Published by Harry Burnet, Crystal Beach, ON Printed by Americhrome: Leipzig, Berlin, New York - Printed in the United States
