Finland, 26 Aug 1953. Scott #309, issued 27 January 1953 according to the Scott Online Catalogue. If that issue date is accurate, I guess this isn't really a First Day Cover, despite the cancellation. Raittiuden Ystävät (Finnish) or Nykterhetens vänner (Swedish) (English: 'Friends of Teetotalism') is Finland's oldest temperance society. The organization was founded in 1853 and this cover celebrates it's 100th anniversary. “Raittius Maan Tavaksi” (translated as “Sobriety as the Custom of the Nation”) is a Finnish movement aimed at promoting sobriety and a healthy lifestyle free from alcohol and other intoxicants. There is a Wikipedia site containing more information.

Taos, New Mexico for 29 August 1968. us.taos.nm-1968.08.29 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr The message on the post card reads: Dear Mom and Dad. We had an interesting trip into the oldest Pueblo, You can see their baking ovens. The men wear blankets around them like the Arab women do. The city of Santa Fe looks like Mexico as do parts of Albuquerque. Love Rozy. P.S. This is the oldest apartment house in the world. The oldest occupied pueblo is Oraibi, on the Hopi Reservation. It's also the oldest continually occupied town in North America. (The post card doesn't identify the photo as being Oraibi, but as far as I can tell it is.) I visited there many years ago.

August 30, 1948 ... a rather ordinary ArtCraft FDC. This one commemorating the dedication of the 200 inch telescope at Palomar Mountain Observatory a few months earlier. Seeing it, however, has me reflecting on how science has evolved in the popular imagination. Science in the late 1940's and early 50's was full of optimism and hope for the future. Unlimited power, an end to food scarcity, the dawn of the space age ... it naively seemed that science would solve all of our problems. When I was young scientists, astronomers especially, were heroes -- the job many children wated when they grew up. Then came Godzilla (smile) a monster created by atomic power. Science is still cool, so many discoveries and amazing achievements, but we are far more aware of the problems that science cannot solve. This cover, from 1948, captures the enthusiasm and wonder of that time. Stamp:USA - Palomar Mountain Observatory 3c Blue Issued: August 30, 1948 Sc. 966 Cancel: PALOMAR MOUNTAIN CALIF. AUG 30 / 9-AM / 1948

September 1, 1987 ... A CDS from Jersey on a stamp illustrating the burning of HM Galley Alarm on Rhode Island. It had been a merchant vessel (the Mountfield) purchased in June 1777 by the Royal Navy to add to its assets during the American Revolution. In October, after fitting the ship with eight guns, it was commissioned and placed under the command of Lt. Philippe d'Auvergne. Lt. d'Auvergne was born (you guessed it) in Jersey. After signing treaty of Alliance in 1778, France sent French Frigates to support the Americans. When some of them entered the waters near Rhode Island, Lt. d'Auvergne followed his written orders and on July 30, 1778 ran his small ship ashore and set fire to her. Now ashore he was made a Major of the Naval Brigade. On September 28, 1778 he was courtmartialed aboard HMS Royal Oak and acquitted. The British had been forced to scuttle ten vessels in all. He went on to become a Vice-Admiral of the Red. Stamp:Jersey: One of a series of five stamps about Philippe d'Auvergne 'Alarm' Burned on Rhode Island 15p Issued on July 9, 1987 Sc. 427 Cancel: CDS with Slogan Outer - JERSEY CHANNEL ISLANDSInner - 3:30 PM / 1 SEPT / 1987Slogan - [JERSEY STA] MPS / [W] ORTH / [COLLECT] ING ... My guess, comments welcome
