This Victorian "cover" seems to have been written, mailed & has a receiving office back stamp on the same day in 1853 (SEPT 21) Braintree Essex . It's a pity the cancellation on the front is unclear. Fast service in those days though??

September 21, 1943 ... and this cover was canceled in Calgary, Alberta and sent to Detroit, Michigan. The cachet is based on a poster created early during World War 2 by the Ministry of Information in the UK. The idea was that, to a much greater extent than in past wars, civilians were directly threatened by the war due to aerial bombing. Therefore, whether at home or in the field, everyone needed to consider themselves part of the war effort. Stamp:Canada - 1938 Pictoral Issue Series / The Royal Visit "National Memorial, Ottawa" 2c Brown and Black Issued on May 15, 1938 Unitrade 247 Cancel: Slogan Cancel Single Ring - Outer: CALGARY ALTAInner: SEP 21 / 10 PM / 1943Slogan: CONSERVE COAL SAVE ONE TON IN FIVE

Agree, confusing at first, just compare the second "R" in romford, that has weird legs as well. also over inked does not help

September 24, 1951 ... and this cover was cancelled at CAPEX. 1951 was the centenary of Canada's first adhesive postage stamps and the entire commemorative series was added to this 'Official' CAPEX Philatelic Souvenir. A rather fanciful cachet suggesting that in 1851 the mail was being delivered by a coureur des bois on snowshoes. A better and slightly more accurate view of postal delivery methods in 1851 can be found on the 4, 5, and 7 cent stamps themselves. The cover went from Toronto to Perth, ON. There is an arrival (transit?) cancel on the back for RIDEAU FERRY ONT ... a village just oppostive the town of Perth. In 1951 there was no ferry, just a bridge. Sadly, the cover is in pretty sad shape. It was not well cared for over the years by its owners.

Sweden was in the middle of it's Nobel Prize series. It was a great idea. Kept everybody busy for decades. Trouble was, many were tough to illustrate. Scientists often were just impossible. There are some goodies. And some mistakes.
Here, Australia's Patrick White got a heavy stroke of cornball. It's not genius, but gets the context right. I read White's monumental novel Voss while still in high school and was stunned; existential explorers who glimpse enlightenment. My classmates were getting stoned, dope mostly. I tried. Voss was better. I don't remember any kangaroos in that one. Hopped by too fast? In White's A Fringe of Leaves, a shipwrecked migrant survives on a putrefying kangaroo carcass.

September 25, 1963 ... and this FDC was postmarked at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It commemorates the 200th anniversary of the "First Land Route" of the Royal Mail in Canada. On the surface it's a pretty mundane cover. Typical of the 1960s and issued for yet another five-cent Canadian stamp, the workhorse of its time. So, what can we do to make it a bit more interesting? Well, we can check out Andrew J. Liptak's wonderful blog post on this stamp -- now hosted and managed by the Postal History Society of Canada. Here's the link. postalhistorycorner.blogspot.com/2010/10/1963-postal-bi-centennial-first-land.htmlOn the blog you can find the map of this land route. The stamp (and cachet) focuses on the portion that is now part of Canada. But, in fact, the actual land route went from Quebec City to New York. It included the section along the St. Lawrence River from Quebec City to Montreal, of course, but it continued down the Richelieu River to Lake Champlain, to Albany and down the Hudson River to New York. At the time, all of this was part of British North America. Benjamin Franklin and John Foxcraft were joint deputy postmasters' general and wanted a route from the former French Colonies (having just been acquired by Britain) to the colonies on the Atlantic Coast. The blog post also includes 12 images, from the National Archives of Canada, of the essays for this stamp. Some of my favourites (smile): Nice idea, I guess, but a CDS in 1763? There are also many other examples of FDCs for this stamp (in addition to the Rose Craft version posted above) as well as examples of usage. Well worth a read. And, a good site to add to your list of research resources. Wouldn't it be great if, at some point in the future, there was a joint issue stamp from Canada and the US featuring the entire route? Stamp:Canada - Postal Service / Commeorating the 200th anniversary of the establishment of regular postal service between Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres and Montreal. "Postrider and Map" 5c Green and Red Brown, Engraved (2 colours) Issued on September 25, 1963 Unitrade 413
