Great Britain sg 197 cancelled on September 26, 1894 in Dorchester. iswscwebmasterOf all the 1000's and 1000's of postmarks, I have viewed I would think this is the first with a code of "Q" if, indeed that is what it is.

Whenever co-workers go on holiday, I ask them to send me a postcard, providing that it is not too much of a hassle. Here is a nice one from Kastela, Croatia for 27 September 2017. croatia.kastela-2017.09.27 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr

September 28, 1943 ... and this cancel was given to these three FDCs ... and 163,475 other ones at the post office in Washington, DC. A total of 500,921 stamps honouring France were sold on this day. They would continue to be avaiable until December 2, 1944 - almost six months after D-Day. If you're interested in the Overrun Countries Series there is a marvellous presentation by Hal Klein on the Lancaster Country Philatelic Society's website. Here is the link. It's a PDF file that you can save in your library: lcps-stamps.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/2018-02-14_Klein-OverrunCountriesSeries1943-44Part1F.pdfStamp: USA - Overrun Countries Series France - Flag, Phenoix Rising and Broken Chains 5c, Flat-plate Issued on September 28, 1943 Sc. 915

The Dalles, Oregon for 30 September 1965, with some excellent customer service from JC Penney. us.the.dalles.or-1965.09.30 by Mick Taylor, on Flickr Incidentally, "Dalles" rhymes with "gals" rather than being a homophone of dolls. Oregon is full of idiosyncratic pronunciations in place names. So Couch is pronounced "cooch", Madras is "MAD-ras" and Yachats in "Yah-hots".

September 30, 1935 ... and this Boulder City cancel was struck on a cover celebrating the official dedication of Boulder Dam - a dam big project during the depression. Three things I find interesting ... 1 - It was a project started during the administration of Herbert Hoover. After his election defeat in 1932, however, the new Secretary of the Interior in the Roosevelt administration, Harold Ickes, ordered the dam be referred to as the Boulder Dam rather than the Hoover Dam. The following stamp, the cachet on the cover ... and all other official materials at the time called it Boulder Dam. During his speech at the dedication on September 30th, the Secretary drove the point home by using the name Boulder Dam five times in one thirty second segment. Former president Hoover was not invited to the dedication. Over the next twelve years, however, most Americans used both names in casual speech. In 1947 both Houses of Congress passed a bill to settle the matter and formally changed the name back to Hoover Dam. 2 - As you can see on the bottom of the cover, the dedication had been rescheduled. Secretary Ickes wanted to make sure Roosevelt could attend during a tour the president was making of the western states. 3 - Boulder City, where the cover was cancelled, was a government planned city built in 1931 to house the 5,000+ workers building the Hoover Dam. Since the Bureau of Reclamation (the US government agency building the dam) assumed that everyone living there would be single and male, in this 'planned' city with lots of parks and recreation, there were no schools and no hospitals. There was also no alcohol and no gambling. The government gave up control to its residents (and the state) in 1959. Today, there is alcohol ... but still no gambling. One of only two places in Nevada that can say that. (The city is still called Boulder City - smile) Stamp:USA - Boulder Dam / Commemoration 3c Purple Issued on September 30, 1935 Sc. 774 Cancel: Duplex Outer circle - BOULDER CITY NEV. Inner - SEP 30 / 9-AM / 1935

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

October 1, 1948 I do not normally collect first day covers but for some reason I liked this one enough to stick in a binder with other odds and end. Maybe it was my political junky side showing. The stamp is a Unitrade 277 issued to celebrate 100 years of responsible government. I guess before that we had irresponsible government. The cover was mailed from Ottawa and with an promotional slogan cancel. PAY SMALL ACCOUNTS BY POSTAL RATE -SAFE - CHEAP-
