The Großlinienschiff "Prinzregent Luitpold",a sistership of the one shown above was the last built of the "Kaiserklasse" battleships.Put into service in 1913,it lacked the third (middle) propellor of this series. The reason was, that it had been planned to use a 12.000 hps Diesel engine to power the propellor. The other ships were all powered by steam-turbines only, the same as the two outer propellors of the "Prinzregent Luitpold". However M.A.N. could not make the Diesel engine reliable enough,to put it into service. The ship had the same fate as the "Friedrich der Große" it was sinked by her crew at Scapa Flow in 1919.
In 1917,due to bad living conditions and harsh treatment by their officers the crews of both battleships mutinyed. Order was "restored" quickly, five sailors were condemned to death for mutiny and disobedience of orders. Three of them were pardoned.Max Reichpietsch and Albin Köbis were executed.

thanks salentin it is nice to see some detailed and accurate information on some of the finest ships of the High Seas Fleet from WWI and before. I have long been a student of Naval History and collector of related things, and the High Seas Fleet was a remarkable creation over a relatively few years, devotion of the entire German nation and a fine Naval Service created it, and fate ended it at Scapa Flow as you stated. They were fine ships the best of their types at the time, and pinnacles of engineering and design, and compartmentalization. It was sad fate. The revolution among the sailors was also sad, it was true that the officer class and the upper class of many European nations of that time were at times dictatorial and unfair in their treatment of others of other classes.A number of the naval services of that era had that issue including the Imperial Russian Fleet and later on in the 30s, the Imperial Japanese Navy also suffered from this. That is very nice to see stamps were issued of those fine ships thanks again for sharing that.
photo attached of the High Seas Fleet at sea with one of the Braunschweig class Battleships leading the line. Designing, building, Launching, training, maintaining a modern fleet at that time and operating it at sea was one of the most demanding and complex technological achievements of that time and one of the key signs of a modern nation state. With only primitive radio, and mostly just visual flag and blinker light command systems at sea, directing such a fleet was another amazing process.
Each of those ships was a tiny world of its own, manned by over a thousand sailors and officers, each with their individual duties and areas of expertise often gained by years of experience though the High Seas Fleet many of the sailors served a relatively short term of service but the Petty officers and the officers has careers lasting years with much technical training and skill needed.
all of that led to the modern ships of that era and any area often appeared on stamps of nations which had such fleets and ships.

The battle-cruiser "Seydlitz" was the only ship of this type. Put into service in 1913,it took part in a number of battles, suffering heavy casualties. The ship also ended at Scapa Flow in 1919. The build-up of the german fleet, played an important role in the led up to WW I. It was clear that in the end Britain would be no longer supreme at sea. So they did nothing to avoid the war in 1914. Sounds familiar to today. Now it is China that challenges the US supremacy on the oceans. Hopefully all have learned from 1914 !
