It would be nice to include the cancellation in the presentation. I think it's TSUMEB.

The "Cap Polonio" was built in 1914.But because of the war,she was put into service on the Germany-South-America- Line only in 1922.At the time she was Germany´s largest ship.Built as a luxury-liner for 1525 passengers, she had a crew of 460.She also went on cruises for south-american passengers. The Great Depression ended all that and she was put out of service in 1930 and scrapped in 1935.
Stamp issued on April 14th,1977. (from a set of 4)

The fast-steamer "Deutschland" was put into service on the Hamburg-America line in 1900. She won the "Blue Ribbon" for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic on her maiden voyage. However her speed needed so much fuel (coal),what made her unprofitable. So she was converted to a cruise-ship - the worldwide largest at the time - in 1910 and was renamed "Victoria Luise". The ship was in such a bad shape, that the enemy-powers did not confiscate her after the war. So she remained Germany´s only large passenger ship. Again she was rebuild and renamed as "Hansa" and was used as an emigrants-carrier to the US. When the US restricted imigration, the ship was taken out of service and scrapped in 1925. Stamp issued Aug.12th,2010. (from a set of 4)

The "Imperator" was put into service in 1913 on North-America line. He (!) had room for 4278 passengers and a crew 1200,amongst them 350 stokers. By then he was the largest ship worldwide, larger than the ill-fated Titanic. After the war, confiscated by the enemy-powers,she served as a troop carrier of the US-navy. In 1920 he was given to Britain and renamed "Berengaria",serving, after being refurbished, on the North-Atlantic-route for 16 years till 1938. The ship was scrapped in 1946.

The "Aller" was the first fast-steamer of the Nordeutscher Lloyd, with a body completely made of steel. Built by Fairfield in Glasgow, she was put into service in 1886. She served on the Bremerhaven-New York line and from 1897 till 1902 on the Genoa-New York line. Scrapped in Genoa in 1904.

Fast-steamer "Columbus" Another ship with an interesting history: Put into service in 1924,she served on the North-America line and on cruises. On a cruise in the Carribean, she was surprised by the start of WW II. It took a while to unload her mostly cuban passengers and wait in a neutral port in Mexico for refuling. In December 1939 she started from there to reach Germany. Monitored by the US-Navy,she took her way through the waters of the then neutral USA. However the Americans gave her exact position to the British hourly. So when the "Columbus" finally left US-waters,she was expected by the british destroyer "Hyperion". The captain did not want to hand over the ship to the enemy and so the crew set fire to the "Columbus" and sunk her. Except of three stokers, who could not escape the burning and sinking ship, the more than 500 crew were taken on board of the US-cruisier "Tuscaloosa",the very ship what had betrayed the postion of the "Columbus" to the British. The crew was interned in the US till the end of the war.

HMS Resolution As an assistant to his father,Georg Forster (1754-94) took part in James Cook´s second voyage around the world (1772-75). He became an eminent ethnologist and is considered as the inventor of modern reports of journeys and travel books. He was also a revolutionary (french revolution),who had to flee Germany when french troops left Germany in 1793. He died in Paris in 1794.
